Pre-Writing Activities with Squishy Bags

Learning 4 Kids http://ift.tt/1CmuZwT free Printable Flip Book to use with Pre-writing squishy bag

Pre-Writing Activities with Squishy Bags is a great way to target writing skills without using paper and pencils. It is providing a fun and exciting way to invite children to practise writing letters, numbers, their name, drawing pictures, shapes and words. Children can practice hand and finger movements for pre-writing development on the squishy bag.

We have included with this activity a free Printable Number and Shapes Flip Book that will provide a resource for children to trace and copy certain strokes and markings onto the squishy bag.

What you will need?

Pre-writing on squishy bags

You will need a squishy bag (How to make Squishy Bag? here) and a cotton bud (also known as Q-tip).

See below for the link to download and print the Number and Shapes Flip Books. You will also need a hole punch and curtain ring to create the flip book.

Free Printable Number and Shapes Flip Book

To make the Number and Shapes Flip Books, we cut out the printable and laminated each card. After cutting the laminated cards out again, we hole punched a small hole in each corner and threading them onto a curtain ring.

Some Ideas:

  • Let their imaginations run free to draw, create shapes, lines and patterns on the squishy bag.
  • Use a soft paint brush or a cotton wool bud (Q-Tip) to write your name, letters, numbers and shapes.
  • Trace your finger over the shapes and numbers on the flip book before drawing them onto the squishy bag.
  • Place the squishy bag onto a light table/panel.
  • If the squishy bag keeps moving while drawing, sticky tape the sides of the bag to a flat surface.
  • Placing a white sheet of paper underneath the squishy bag will also help the drawings present clearer.
  • Use words such as: up, down, straight line and around to describe how to form the numbers and shapes.

Writing Numbers on a Sensory Squishy Bag with free printable number flip book

Our Printable Number Flip book contains numbers from 0-20. I have done this so that the flip book can be used with a wider age range of children. In the beginning I would only introduce numbers 0-3 and add on as the child grows and develops. Presenting too many numbers at once can be overwhelming for a child who is not ready and will quickly loose interest.
