Francis loves having kid’s crafts decorating the house, especially when they look as pretty as this!
While decorating for Christmas this year, we decided to add some extra cuteness to our Christmas lights and it turned out to be a great way to work on fine motor skills. And fun too!
My daughter wanted to us to make homemade pom poms to lengthen the activity, but these Christmas lights will look as great with store-bought pom poms too.
What you’ll need to make pom pom Christmas lights:
– Yarn in Christmassy colors
– 2 toilet rolls
– 1 clothes peg
– Scissors
How to make homemade pom poms with your child.
Using the clothespin to hold the 2 toilet rolls together, wind the yarn around both rolls together over and over again.
If you want your pom pom to have more than one color, tie 2 colored yarns together like we did.
We went over the rolls around 70 times with the yarn, and yes we did dare to count that together!
Melissa has just started practicing counting up to 100, so she enjoyed this part a lot. The more loops of yarn you add, the fluffier the pom pom will be.
We used a small piece of yarn pulled between the rolls to tie a loose knot right around the entire bundle of yarn.
We then pulled the yarn off the rolls and tightened it with another knot, making sure it was in the middle.
Melissa then used her scissors to cut the loops of yarn at either side of the knot. She is getting better and better at using the scissors!
To make the pom pom look neater, we need to trim off the ends. This was Melissa’s favorite part!
There’s no right or wrong here, trim until the pom pom looks fluffy and tidy.
It did take us a while to finish all these pom poms, because we had to take breaks between trimming. It proved to be a very good hand-strengthening exercise!
We tied the pom poms onto the Christmas lights (between each light) and we were very pleased with how it looked on our Christmas tree!
Melissa even suggested putting the lights in her room when the time comes to take the Christmas decorations down. I think that’s a great idea!
