Some new and exciting pool noodle activities to try! Turns out there are a lots of things to do with old pool noodles. Bonus, recycle while having fun!
Besides using pool noodles to float in a pool, why not upcycle them into new and exciting activities. (Or find some on Amazon.)
Not only can we use pool noodles outside but also inside on a rainy day. Who knew!
Finding other uses for materials I have at home, is always a plus.
Changing things around provides a new found love for things. Pool noodles are definitely one of those items! I love the versatility they can provide.
Simple and Fun Pool Noodle Activities Your Children will Love
Pool Noodle Fishing
These adorable, upcycled fish made from are sure to catch your child’s attention. Kids love fishing!
Cut a pool noodle into small sections then cut each section in half. Open a paper clip and push it in as a tail. Then if you like, add googly eyes. I love googly eyes and so do my kids!
For the fishing rod, glue a magnet to string and attach it to a stick, wooden spoon or anything else long you might have lying around.
Add water to a container and you’re ready to go! We used our kiddie pool and my girls loved it! This pool noodle activity is sure to please!
Look at those smiles!
After playing for a bit, my girls started to challenge each other as to who could catch the most fish in one cast! So much fun was had!
Pool Noodle Boats
What’s more fun than playing in a pool?
Playing in a pool with homemade boats!
To make your own boats, cut a pool noodle into sections. Next, cut a triangle out of a foam sheet and then add a straw through it. Cut a slit in the top of the pool noodle section to attach the sail.
Next, let your child decorate the boat with sticker gems, if wanted. My girls think sticker gems are the best! Anytime we get to decorate something, sticker gems are always a favorite!
Next, test the boats out! My girls were actually shocked that they floated.
The sweet and innocence of young minds are so dearing to observe.
Pool Noodle and Toothpick Towers
For this activity, all you need is pool noodles cut into sections and toothpicks. That’s it!
Let your child’s imagination explore! See what they can build!
This activity is so open ended that my girls have asked to do multiple times.
From towers, cars, people to even trains! Kids have so much fun building.
Pool Noodle Water Towers
Here’s another building activity that can be done with pool noodles.
All you need is pool noodles cut into sections and a container with water. Once again, we used our kiddie pool!
My kids get excited over any activity involving the pool and why not, playing outside with water is so much fun!
I must say, though, this activity was a little trickier than I expected as building towers in water adds a new challenge. However, my girls were up for it.
They tried and tried, over and over again! They were definitely persistent and had lots of fun!
Giant Chopsticks
For this activity, you will need 2 pool noodles, balloons and 2 large containers.
The object of this activity is to use the pool noodles as chopsticks to pick up balloons from one container and put into the other.
For younger children, shorten the noodles as the longer the noodle, the harder it is.
Just a tip, if doing this activity outside, don’t do it on a windy day. A few balloons escaped on us! However, that did add to the fun for the girls. Every once in a while they took off running across the yard, giggling and chasing a balloon.
Backyard Alphabet Match Up
My last activity is a little different than the previous ones as it involves learning ABC’s and gross motor skills.
To set up this activity, you will need pool noodles cut into sections and popsicle sticks.
Depending on your child’s level, decide what you would like your child to match up. We used upper/lowercase letter matching but if your child is not there yet, you could use letter matching, number matching, colours or even shapes.
Draw or write each match on each section of the noodles.
Place popsicle sticks in the ground around the backyard and attach one of the matching pairs onto each. Give your child a bag or bin with the other side of the matching pairs.
Your child then scours the yard for each match and places it on the popsicle stick once found.
My girls thought this was awesome. They did each one individually and ran back and forth each time to get a new noodle to match.
Having fun burning off excesses energy is so much fun. Learning while doing it, is even better!
Pool Noodles have become a big hit in my house and my girls can’t wait to see what activity I can come up with next.
