Do you remember those little pom pom guys with adhesive feet from the 1980s? Restaurants and stores used them for advertising and schools gave them to children as reading rewards? I had a BIG collection of them on the bulletin board above my desk, and loved wearing them on my shoulder!
You don’t see them around anymore…and honestly, I’m not even sure what they are called. This past weekend, my son and I made a few and decided to call them Pom Pom Friends. He loved them just as much as I did back in 1987!
Pom Pom Friends
These little guys are easy to make and are sure to bring a smile to your child’s face. Here’s what you’ll need:
- medium pom poms
- embroidery floss
- googly eyes
- stiff felt
- white ribbon
- Glue Dots
- stickers with inspirational quotes
- sewing needle
- scissors
First, secure the googly eyes to the pom pom with the Glue Dots. Then cut out a small pair of feet from the felt.
Next, cut a small strip of ribbon. Press down an inspirational quote sticker to the ribbon.

Thread the needle with the embroidery floss. To make the antennae of the pom pom friend, string the thread from the bottom to the top of the pom pom, cut the string, then repeat.
Last, use Glue Dots to attach the ribbon and pom pom to the felt feet.
Secure to your child’s shoulder with tape and enjoy!
