Teething can be a trying time for mothers. It can make your child cranky, cause sleep disturbances, and be a downright awful time. You may be wondering what you can do to help your child get through this rough patch with minimal pain. Here are some things to keep in mind about using essential oils for teething children.
How to Use Essential Oils for Teething
Children younger than six years old should never consume essential oils of any kind. To some, this may seem confusing. How can essential oils help your teething child if you’re not applying it directly to their gums? Applying a diluted amount (generally, .25% or one drop of essential oil for every 4 teaspoons) to your child’s chest will allow them to inhale the essential oil and reap the benefits.
Choosing Essential Oils for Teething
It’s important to choose the right essential oil to help with teething. You will want to be sure to use a mild essential oil that won’t cause any harm to your child. Lavender is a great choice. Not only does it help reduce pain and swelling due to its anti-inflammatory properties, but lavender essential oil can also help make your child feel calmer.
Warnings
Always consult with your child’s pediatrician before using essential oils for teething. While some essential oils are believed to be safe for babies and young children to inhale when used in very diluted amounts, others can be extremely dangerous. This is why it’s important to do your research ahead of time. You will want to make sure that you’re using an essential oil that’s not only safe for your child to use but that the amount of essential oil you’re using is also safe.
The Myth About Clove Essential Oil
A common myth is that clove essential oil is an essential oil that, when diluted, is safe to apply directly to your child’s gums. This couldn’t be any further from the truth.
Clove essential oil is not recommended for children under the age of two. Clove essential oil is recognized as a skin sensitizer, meaning it will cause an allergic reaction upon contact. It can also irritate your child’s mucous membranes and may prevent blood from clotting. Since children under two already have more sensitive skin than adults do, these side effects can be worse.
These are just some things to know about using essential oils for teething children. Although essential oils can be a good way to provide pain relief to teething children, it’s important to make sure that you are doing so with safety in mind.
