For a little high energy fun, we decided to hang a hula hoop from the ceiling and smash it like a piñata.
It was a challenge for hand-eye coordination and made her jump a lot too!

What you will need:

– Tissue paper
– Scissors
– Sticky tape
– String or yarn
– Hula hoop (or even make one out of cardboard)
– Paper towel roll (or anything that can smash the tissue paper!)

We covered the hoop with some tissue paper using sticky tape and cut off the excess paper all the way around.
Melissa is getting better and better at her scissors skills and did this part all by herself.

I tied a length of yarn to the hoop, long enough for her to have to jump to reach the top part of it.
I stuck the end of the yarn to the ceiling with sticky tape and Melissa got her paper towel roll ready.

At first, she was a bit unsure how much strength to put into the smashing. But she caught on well and was soon smashing the whole thing up!

I encouraged her to try different ways of swinging the roll.
Balancing herself while swinging with force and holding the roll with both hands was a new experience for her!

To add a challenge to the smashing, I also drew some x’s in different spots on the tissue paper, so she could try aiming too.
Next time we’ll try some new challenges, like with the real piñata activity:
– smashing with eyes blindfolded
– smashing blindfolded after spinning around!

What other fun smashing challenges can you think of?
