Summer is the perfect time for outdoor explorations. Research says that outside play is essential for raising healthy kids.
Being outdoors benefits children physically, socially, emotionally, and pretty much in every way!
With long days and a slower pace of life, summer is a chance to get outdoors more than ever.
But what can your kids do outdoors?
We like to keep things interesting by adding fun challenges to summer activities.
Recently, my kids created a super simple frozen summer time capsule. We wanted to capture their favorite things from summer, all in one place.
Frozen Summer Time Capsule Activity for Kids:
This magical ice time capsule is the perfect solution!
For this summer time capsule activity you’ll need:
- ice cube tray, or Tupperware container
- favorite summer toys
- found objects from nature
- water
- space on your freezer shelf!
Set Up the Container
First, set up the container your kids will use for the summer time capsule.
You can use an ice cube tray or any freezer-safe container. We used a plastic Tupperware container so we would have lots of room.
(Or maybe because our ice cube trays always go missing when the kids borrow them for experiments. You decide.)
Got your container? Fill it about 3/4 full with water. You’re ready to go!

Collect the Objects for your kids summer time capsule
What are your child’s favorite summer things? What small objects capture that carefree summer feeling?
Collect whatever gives them that magical summer feeling.
- favorite toys your child plays with all summer long
- fresh grass
- bright and colorful flowers
- something that is super special (but your child won’t mind freezing!)
My son added in his favorite toy truck.
My daughter added a piece of her pretend play princess cake.
Then we headed outside to round up a few magical summer objects to add to our time capsule! A stick…
some tree bark, and a flower…
When you’ve got a summery collection of favorite things, place them in your container. We had fun observing which objects floated as well!

Time to Freeze Your Time Capsule!
Now it’s time for a little patience.
Place your time capsule container in the freezer for a few hours.
While it freezes, go outside and enjoy some popsicles to cool off!
After a few hours, pull out your frozen summer time capsule. Look at the beautiful way the objects are frozen in time!
Keep your time capsule frozen for as long as you want.
Or take a quick photo that will last forever and then let your kids take your time capsule outside and watch it melt in the summer sunshine.
Either way, this simple summer activity for kids is one you’ll always remember!
