Here’s an unexpected number learning activity from Hands On As We Grow contributor Francis that’s perfect for keeping kids busy while you’re in the kitchen.

I love to take my preschooler with me for an afternoon of grocery shopping. It’s good one on one time and we have a lot of fun.

Putting the groceries away when we get home can be a challenge since we go to two grocery stores. One day a simple kitchen scale kept her busy, and I even had time to cook dinner! Score!

I placed the kitchen scale on the kitchen floor and the fun began! We used a digital kitchen scale like this one (affiliate link), but an analog one would work well too.

Melissa put the products she thought were the heaviest first on the scale. She enjoyed reading the numbers out loud for me while I put the other groceries away. We talked about which numbers were bigger and which ones were smaller.

After weighing the heavy groceries, she went on a search to find the lightest groceries. It took a lot of guessing and weighing in her hands before placing the items on the scale.

She also had fun stacking and balancing the groceries on the kitchen scale. She enjoyed watching the numbers change each time she added or removed an item.

Melissa is still learning which numbers are bigger and which are smaller. This number learning activity was great for her to explore numbers and weight.

We used the kitchen scale to weigh our groceries, but there are many other fun things your child could weigh!

Some things that sound fun to weigh…

  • Nature: sticks, stones, leaves and even grass!
  • LEGO towers
  • Sponges: wet vs dry
  • Books vs paper sheets

What other things would be fun to weigh?
