What I love about Hamburger Scalloped Potatoes is that it’s not only easy to make, but that my kids love it too. It makes a great alternative to tater tot casserole for when you want something a little more dressed up for company. I love it because it combines nutrition from different food groups and it’s filling.
Alternatively, you could just make our Tater Tot Casserole.
Making Hamburger Scalloped Potatoes is pretty straight forward. You’ll brown the hamburger with seasonings and then make a simple cheese sauce. Then everything is added to a large casserole dish and baked. What I love about casserole recipes is that they can be frozen for a rainy day or made a day ahead (they almost always taste better on the second day).
Hamburger Scalloped Potatoes
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 white onion, chopped
- 5 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 6 medium potatoes
- 3 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 Tablespoon parsley flakes
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon marjoram
- salt, to taste
- 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, minced
- 4 Tablespoons butter
- scant 1/4 cup all purpose flour
Directions
In a large skillet over medium, brown ground beef. Add seasonings (except thyme) and salt, to taste.
In a large saucepan over a medium low flame, melt butter. Add onion and saute until softened, 3-5 minutes. Add flour and stir to combine. Quickly add milk and whisk constantly over a medium to medium high flame until mixture thickens and is bubbly.
Add 3 cups of the shredded cheese and stir to combine.
Add thyme to cheese sauce and stir to combine.
Wash and scrub potatoes. Slice 1/4 inch thin. Try to make each slice about the same size.
Spray a 10×13 casserole dish with cooking spray. Take 1/2 of the potatoes and make a layer in the bottom of the casserole dish.
Top with 1/2 of the seasoned ground beef.
Top with 1/2 of the cheese sauce.
Repeat.
Top with remaining 2 cups of shredded cheese.
Bake at 350 F for 45 minutes. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving. I like to serve my Hamburger Scalloped Potatoes with a fresh garden salad.
