March is Women’s History Month and I want to do a little something to celebrate it with a few women history books and having a corresponding activity to do with each.
With having three boys myself, I hate to say it, but women kind of get left out of the mix most of the time!
My oldest as been reading a ton of chapter books now that’s he’s in third grade and this year we happened upon the Who Was and Who Is series of books. They are a great starting place for biographies that kids can read, learn a lot, and actually comprehend what that person is all about! They’re quite clever.
Not all of my kids are ready to read them though, so I am very excited to be working with Audible this year, and they have this entire series as audiobooks!
Let’s back up a second. First of all, I let my kids choose the books they read on their time. I refuse to force them to read anything they wouldn’t choose themselves. So I am not about to make my third grader sit down and read a history book about a woman in history that he’s not interested in (that’s not saying he’s not, it’s just saying I wouldn’t push it on him).
However, I do believe that my boys need to know that women are fantastic human beings and do great things that have helped shape the world the way it is today, just as much as men have (if not more, but I won’t get into that).
So instead of forcing him to read a chapter book, I want to make it a fun thing to take part in. And for all my kids to take part in, since they’re not all reading yet.
All of these books are right around an hour to listen to on Audible. Pair it with an activity or craft and voila! They’re learning about women in history while creating or doing something that woman is famous for to reiterate her importance.

Of course, I could keep listing more and more amazing women from history, such as Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Anne Frank, Betsy Ross, or Laura Ingalls Wilder (which by the way all are part of this amazing Who Was series)!
This is a series definitely worth checking out, whether you have a reader that loves non-fiction books like mine do, or on Audible as a way to sneak learning about someone amazing while doing a crafty project.
