Setting up a mud painting station outdoors is a fun way to encourage movement and gross motor skills.
This week, I took my pint size artists outside to explore and paint with mud. Boy, it was messy, but so much fun!

Mud Painting With Kids:
I decided it would be fun for my students to explore their creativity outside, to make art from nature.
I announced, “Today we are making mud paint!” My four little pint size artists excitedly took their buckets and marched to the garden.
Their eyes magically lit up as they filled their buckets with dark earth.
Next, they added water and stirred with a stick until mud formed like thick paint. I could hear their sweet giggles as they asked me:
“What are we going to do with the mud?”
“It’s a surprise,” I said.
Meanwhile, I placed four tomato cages on the lawn. I leaned old pieces of plexiglass against the cages to create makeshift art easels.
I taped pieces of white construction paper to the plexiglass. (Foam core would work just as well as plexiglass).
Finally, I gave them each a paintbrush and directed them to the easels. I could hear their curiosity as they “oohed” and “ahhed” with mud paint.
The kids used mud paint just as they would regular paint. They loved the drips, drops, and texture the paint formed on the paper.
And when they were finished painting on the easels, I laid out pieces of white craft paper under each swing.
The kids took turns swinging, painting, and squealing with delight.
No matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t keep the dirt outside!
In a matter of seconds, I had eight little hands and feet trampling through my garage and mudroom to wash their hands. The dirt and mud were everywhere! It was on the floor, the door, and on the faucet.
