Classic Craft: Making Paper Bag Puppets
This classic craft has been around for years. It’s one that has stood the test of time, even if it has changed or evolved over time. Paper bag puppets are easy to make and really fun for kids to play with. Whether it’s just markers you create your puppets with or you decorate with yarn, paper and buttons, they’re a great project any time.
Making Classic Paper Bag Puppets
Paper bag puppets are perfect for pretend play. Kids can play by themselves, with a friend or sibling or even with a group of friends.
They can host their very own puppet show and all you need to start with is a simple paper bag.
You will need:
- Paper lunch bag
- Markers
- Construction paper and/or scrapbook paper
- Googly eyes
- Pom pom
- Yarn
- Ribbon
- Tools: glue stick, scissors and white craft glue
Making the faces is the fun part! Let your kids use glue and yarn to create hair. They can make pig tails by tying several yarn strands together with a piece of ribbon. Cheeks can be make using markers or pink crayon, I’ve used circles I cut from pink construction paper. Medium pom poms make great noses, and googly eyes will finish off the face. Look for the googly eyes with lashes for girl puppets!
Dressing them up is just as fun as giving their face some character. Use scrapbook paper to create simple clothes, ribbon makes great collar trim! Once the clothes are glued in place, trim off the excess, being careful not to cut the bag.
Boys might like this spiked hair cut. Simply cut yarn into short strands and glue to the top of the bag. Remember, decorating is part of the fun, so let them have a ball!

Paint Sticks Clown Puppets
I have a pretty large stash of paint sticks in my craft room, which is what prompted me to turn a couple of them into clown puppets. There are lots of things you can make from paint sticks and craft sticks, but I decided on clowns because they are colorful and joyful, and sometimes a little scary. I know there are some that fear the clown, which is why I try really hard to make them as cheerful as possible!
After all, the definition of a clown is a comic entertainer. When used to describe someone (stop clowning around!) it means to behave in a comical way, or to act playfully. What could carry more joy than play?
A clown’s costume is usually very colorful and vibrant, often embellished with soft pom-poms and exaggerated accessories, like my clown’s giant bow tie.
Clown Puppets from Paint Sticks
I’ve provided a pattern for you below, but feel free to create your very own designs and embellishments! When you’re all done, have a fun puppet show with the neighborhood kids.
You will need:
- Paint stir stick
- Paint: white, purple, yellow
- Cardstock: pink and red
- Scrapbook paper in colorful patterns (polka dots and stripes work great!)
- Buttons
- Yarn
- Pom poms in various sizes
- Tools: fine point black marker or pen, scissors, white glue
Paint one end of the paint stick white, enough for the head and neck. Mine were rounded on one end, so I used that end. Some paint sticks are square on both ends, so just pick one.
Next paint the rest of the paint stick purple (yellow for the other), leaving 2-3 inches at the end unpainted. This allows you to hold your puppet while decorating without getting paint on your fingers.
Use the pattern above to cut mouth from pink and red card stock. Use black marker to draw the smile on the mouth.
You can use yarn for the hair on one, and pom poms for the other. For yarn, cut it into 1.5” pieces and glue to the top sides of the white end of the stick.
For pom pom hair, glue three medium sized pom poms together in a triangle and let them dry. Cut a small strip of cardboard and glue it to the back of the “head” so that it sticks out on the left and right of the head, attach the pom poms to the ends that are sticking out. This will keep them from falling off.
Use the pattern pieces to cut out the rest of the decorations for the clown’s outfits and glue in place. Use red pom poms for noses.
Attach buttons to the front of the paint stick body with white glue. Allow everything to dry before having your clown puppet show! If you like clowns like I do, I can show you how to make a Paper Plate Clown Puppet as well. Have fun!

Snowman Craft from Foam Cups
One of my all time favorite things to make during the winter months are snowman crafts. You can make almost anything into a snowman! This time I went with foam cups, though I’ve used cardboard tubes, potato chip cans, and even blocks of wood!
Snowman Craft from Foam Cups
For my snowmen, I used coordinating “outfits”, matching up the colors of the scarves and earmuffs. You can use whatever colors you like!
This is a fun snowy day craft the kids will love. They are easy to make and fun to display.
You will need:
- Foam cups
- Felt
- Medium pom poms
- Pipe cleaners
- White craft glue
- Scissors
- Black marker
Cut a 1-inch wide strip of felt using the full length of the felt sheet. Fringe the ends with scissors by cutting 4 or 5 slits at each end.
Place your foam cup upside down. Glue the scarf around the cup, leaving enough room for a face.
Cut triangles from orange felt and glue them to the face area.
For the earmuffs, cut a pipe cleaner in half. Bend it around the top of the snowman and trim the ends so that they hang over by about 1/2-inch.
Trim one side of a pom pom to make it a little flatter.
Glue to the pipe cleaner on the side of the snowman’s head. Repeat for the other side.
Use a black marker to add eyes. You can add eyebrows if you like as well! I always do because it adds to their cute expressions and gives them character.
If you liked this project, you’ll love Michelle’s foam cup farm animal set! And this is one of my favorite snowman crafts of all time! -> Cardboard Tube Children & Snowmen
Hope you have fun!
