DIY Pop Stick Shape Dominoes Game

Learning 4 Kids http://ift.tt/1WWpPNM Homemade Pop Stick Shapes Dominoes - simple hands-on game for learning and playing with shapes.

Dominoes is such a fun and popular game with children! These DIY Pop Stick Shape Dominoes Games is a resource I have made for my classroom to use part of my geometry (shapes) program. It is something that is fun, motivating and a great way for children to consolidate their learning in small independent group activities.

Playing with the Shape Dominoes encourages children to sort, match, name each two dimensional shape and become familiar their attributes, such as a circle is round or a square has four sides, a triangle has 3 corners.

What you will need?

How to make shapes dominoes.

You will need large pop sticks, assorted shape buttons and a hot glue gun.

  1. Place all the pop sticks out in a row.
  2. Sort the buttons into pairs and place one button from the pair onto one pop stick and the other matching button onto another pop stick end. Continue this until all the buttons are laid out on each pop stick, forming a matching pattern sequence.
  3. Carefully place a small amount of hot glue onto the end of the pop stick and gently press the button on top.
  4. Repeat this until all the buttons are glued on.

Let’s Play

Shape Dominoes - homemade classroom resource for learning about shapes.

Here’s what you need to make Valentines Popcorn:

  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/3 cup popcorn kernels
  • 5 oz dark chocolate
  • M&M’s as desired
  • Sprinkles as desired

In a sauce pan heat the oil over medium heat.  Add a couple popcorn kernels and cover.  Once the kernels begin to pop add the remaining kernels to the pan and give it a good shake.  Keep popcorn on the stove top until popping slows down to 2-3 seconds between pops.  Remove from heat and add to a large mixing bowl.

In a double boiler melt the chocolate, constantly stirring until it reaches a smooth consistency.  Once fully melted drizzle over the popcorn.  Allow chocolate to harden.

5 Practical Steps to Raising Uncommon Kids

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/200mzAF practical steps to raise uncommon kids

5-practical-steps-to-raising-uncommon-kids-kab

Everyone’s looking for a quick fix these days.

In a world where companies are creating ways for us to maximize our every minute, our culture as a whole is suffering when it comes to relationships and connections with each other.

raising uncommon kids - kids activities blog

Sure, we can see pictures of our friends’ kids from across the country on Facebook, search up recipes in an instant on Google and pay for things right from our smartphone, but we’ve lost the ability to truly connect with people.

And I’m not just talking about people we know, but those we’ve yet to meet as well. Because when we find ourselves lost in a screen all day, you fail to open up the possibility of impromptu human interactions.

{affiliate links used in this post support Kids Activities Blog}

ORDER-RUKFor our kids to care about others:

  • They need to know there are others to care about.
  • They need to understand the world doesn’t revolve around them.
  • They need to believe they can make a difference not just in the world, but in their neighborhood and most importantly inside their own homes.

After all, if our kids don’t know how to show love to the people they love the most, why would they care about people they don’t even know?

So may I suggest what may seem like a reverse approach to helping the world: lay a foundation of love within your own home first.

Your kids may say they feel loved and I’d bet they’d even admit they love you and their siblings, but do they show it? Before we can be compassionate towards others, we need to practice within the fours walls of our home.

In my book, Raising Uncommon Kids, I talk about 12 characteristics that will help your family on the road to compassion. At the end of each chapter, I include a “Make it Practical” section that outlines exactly how to put those principles into practice.

Actions speak louder than words, so let’s start today by learning 5 practical steps anyone can take to raise uncommon kids.

5 Practical Steps to Raising Uncommon Kids:

  1. Create a family mission statement. Once you do, display it prominently in your home where every member of your family can not only see it, but refer back to it often.
  2. Re-design your home. Go through each room of your house and have each family member call out the thing they like most about that space, whether tangible or intangible. Strive to make everyone’s voice heard and represented in some way.
  3. Parents switch roles with kids for a day. Want to help your kids experience what it’s really like to be you? Switch roles with them for a day. While children are typically thrilled at the prospect of ordering around their parents, the tides typically turn once they discover the new balance of work and play. Even if you don’t do this for an entire day, make sure to save time to celebrate the switching back of roles and debrief what everyone experienced.
  4. Let your children deal with their mistakes. Don’t be so quick to clean up all your children’s messes for them. Think about it. It’s better to help your kids process their flubs while they’re living with you in their school years than to raise them in a bubble and then send them off to college without a hint of what the world will throw at them.
  5. Encourage your kids to do one of their sibling’s chores one day. Explain how a simple act of kindness can break the battle cycle siblings often find themselves in.

Being uncommon isn’t quick or easy, but it is worthwhile. Knowing that you’re living life on your own terms not only allows your family’s heart to be full, but more importantly, fills you with the freedom for that love to overflow to others in need. When you model compassion in your own home, your kids will begin to understand what that could look like outside the walls of your home.

So what are you waiting for? Go on, be uncommon today!

Easy One Pot Sausage & Rice

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/1P4xhRJ Easy One Pot Sausage and Rice

There’s not one week that goes by my kids don’t ask for their favorite turkey sausage. This has become a great go-to meal especially on nights we go to Taekwondo.

So I’m always looking for ways to spice up my kids favorite dinner. This Easy One Pot Sausage & Rice recipe definitely does that. With all the spicy, cajun ingredients, this can also be a lighter version of jambalaya.
Easy One Pot Sausage and Rice

If you make jambalaya or spicy rice at home, you will recognize these ingredients:

Easy One Pot Sausage & Rice

Ingredients:

  • 10 ounces Turkey Sausage, cut into bite sizes
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 1/2 white Onion, diced
  • 1 Green Bell Pepper, diced
  • 2 tablespoons Garlic, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • 1 1/2 cup uncooked Rice (white or brown)
  • 3 cups Chicken Stock
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Hot Chili Sauce (optional)

Easy One Pot Sausage and Rice

The first thing you want to do is pick a pan that is big enough to hold all of these ingredients. You will also need to be able to use a lid.

Over a medium flame, saute the cup up turkey sausage over a tablespoon of olive oil.  Brown the sausage for about 5-6 minutes.

Easy One Pot Sausage and Rice

Next add the diced onion, pepper and garlic. Then season with the cayenne pepper, onion powder and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix it together and put back on the stove. Cook until the onion is translucent. This usually takes another five minutes.

Easy One Pot Sausage and Rice

Add the uncooked rice, chicken stock and bay leaves. I used white rice but you can also use brown rice.  Mix together.

Bring to a boil then cover and simmer for 20 minutes. It will be done when the rice is cooked.

Make sure you keep an eye on the rice because it can stick to the bottom of the pan.

Easy One Pot Sausage and Rice

Remove from the stove when it’s done. If you like it a little spicy, add the Worcestershire sauce and Hot Chili sauce and mix together.

Serve immediately.

Easy One Pot Sausage and Rice

This is another meal that can be served all by itself. Keep it in the pan and put in the center of your kitchen table. If you choose, you can add a vegetable or salad to complete the meal.

Enjoy!

My Baby Hates Tummy Time

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/1nutAgK My baby hates tummy time

“My baby hates tummy time” … I can remember telling the doctor this at our 3 month appointment with our first son.  I would try to distract him with baby toys, I would try singing to him and rubbing his back, but nothing worked.

I knew that it was important, but I hated watching him cry. Experts agree that babies who don’t spend time,on their tummy, face-down often have some delays in their development of motor skills.   As a first-time mom, my mind believed it, but my heart had a harder time with it.  I’m sure most first-time moms are this way.  Fast forward 15 months…

Our second son was born with hypertonicity (high muscle tone) and we started therapy right away.  I soon saw the very important value in tummy time.  Cry as he might (and believe me, he did), I soon realized just how important tummy time was, even though he didn’t like it.

My baby hates tummy time

If your baby hates tummy time, these suggestions will help:

  1. Start small and go from there.  Two minutes at a time, several times a day when you first start.  Doctors agree that by about 3 months of age, babies should be on their tummy for at least 90 minutes a day, broken up into intervals.
  2. Be there to supervise and encourage your child.   You need to watch your child, because when their necks are very weak, they cannot lift it off of the ground even to take a breath.  Do not walk away during tummy time.  You have to be watching and help your baby if he needs it.
  3. The best way to do tummy time when your baby hates tummy time is to place your baby on YOUR tummy.  Lie flat on the ground, on your back and place your baby on your belly and chest.   Talk to him and let him try to look up to find your face.
  4. When your baby cries, he is working his muscles even more.  This is the hard part for me, but let him cry and fuss for just a moment (maybe 15 seconds), while he uses all that he has to lift that little neck to find you ~ waiting for you to come to his rescue.  Try to use this time to coax him with toys or your sing-song words.
  5. Use a rolled up a hand towel to place under his chest as a little “helper” during tummy time.
  6.  “We used a rolled up hand towel and put it behind his upper shoulders, while on his back in a bouncy seat,  so his head and neck wouldn’t rest on the bouncy seat.  We then put a toy that he liked and hung it to the opposite side of where he favored laying his head.”  (Just do this for a few moments, until it becomes uncomfortable for the child) ~Tasha Patton
  7. Lie down with your baby, face to face.
  8. Do tummy time while you are reclined.  Let your baby lie (on their tummy) on your tummy and chest, but when you are reclined in a chair and not lying flat on the ground.  This will help your baby with tummy time by making it a tiny bit easier, but still encourage him to lift his necks and head to see you.
  9. “I used to lay on my back with my feet flat on the floor and my knees bent with my son laying his tummy to my shins. I was able to adjust the angle of my legs to what he needed. He liked this version of tummy time because he could see my face and it felt like a game.” ~Caitlin Scheuplein
  10. Try tummy time on an exercise ball.  Hold your baby in place, the entire time, with his belly on an exercise ball.   As your baby gets older, gently begin to roll the ball, just barely, back and forth.
  11. “My son also hated it but I set up a train on the floor around him and he LOVED it. Soon they are able to roll and it’s not all that big a deal.” ~Jessica Babler
  12. “Just hold him (upright) more. The point of tummy time is to strengthen their muscles in their necks and core. Holding him will straighten them, too. ” ~ Jessica Vergara
  13. “Talk with your doctor. My son did this and I mentioned it to the doctor.  He put him on his tummy and saw how my son flipped out.  He said this isn’t normal.  We soon found out that my son was lactose intolerant and had reflux issues. Once we figured that out , it got better.” ~ Tiana Peterson
  14. Play with your baby!  Don’t expect your baby to entertain himself on the floor.  He may feel alone, so be there with him.
  15. Take baby steps.  30 seconds to two minutes is fine for right now.  Try it several times a day.   You have to start somewhere.
  16. A great tip that our doctor gave us was to do two minutes of tummy time after each diaper change.
  17. Sit in a chair and let your baby lay across your legs, on his tummy, while you rub his back.
  18. Hold your baby up on your chest/shoulder like you are going to burp him.   He is working on his neck and core strength.   The higher that you hold him, the more he will be required to use his own strength and not ‘lean’ on you as much.  (Keep a hand behind his neck for support if needed.)
  19. Lie on your back and lift baby above you (like you are lifting weights).  Try singing “Super Baby” or “Airplane Baby” while you lift him.
  20. Try skin to skin tummy time with your baby.  It has been proven to have amazing benefits for your baby and amazing bonding benefits for both of you.  Skin to skin (AKA: Kangaroo care) is so important when they are new babies.

In the long run, your baby will learn not to hate tummy time.  As my mom said, “You don’t cry when you are on your tummy NOW, do you?  At some point, it just stops.”   Most things are just phases that we must go through (like refusing a bottle… I have been there, too!), but these little tips will hopefully help you to get through this phase a little faster… and onto the more fun ones, like crawling!

In the meantime, check out some of our favorite DIY baby toys that you can use to keep your baby busy and distracted during tummy time.  Be sure to stop by our Facebook page, where we talk about parenting every single day!  We love to hear what you have to say.

Toilet Paper Roll Train Craft

Toilet Paper Roll Train Craft

Whether your kids love trains or they just love crafts, they will have a lot of fun creating this toilet paper roll train craft. This train is made up of all recycled materials, which makes it an inexpensive craft idea. If you love to up-cycle for crafts, check out these other 25 incredible toilet paper roll crafts.

toilet paper roll train craft

I love to make DIY toys that keep the kids busy long after the craft is through. I thought this might be a craft we made and displayed for a while, but I was wrong. When we were done creating, my son made that train go choo-choo all throughout the house. He sat in the kitchen making it travel around him for a while. His legs, tables and chairs around the house became tunnels. This was a craft activity and a toy that resonated with my three year old.

Materials Needed to Make a Toilet Paper Roll Train

  • 6 Toilet Paper Roll Tubes
  • 1 Skinny Cardboard Tube (I used the center of a roll of foil)
  • 20 Lids (milk containers, Vitamin waters, Gatorade)
  • Craft Paint
  • Foam Brushes
  • Yarn
  • Hole Punch or Something to Make a Hole in the Cardboard Tube
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Scissors

how to make a toilet paper roll train

How to Make a Train out of Toilet Paper Rolls

  1. Paint your cardboard tubes various bright colors. Cut C-shapes out of one of the tubes to create both the top of the engine and caboose. Paint those accordingly. Also cut a C-shape out of the skinny cardboard tube and paint it the same color as the engine. The C-Shape tubes will arch nicely around the toilet paper roll.
  2. Once dry, hot glue the tops of the engine and caboose in place. Also, hot glue four plastic lids on each cardboard tube as the wheels of your train.
  3. Punch small holes into the four “corners” of each tube. These are your attachment points for the yarn. Cut the yarn to length.
  4. Weave the thread through one tube and another tube to attach two tubes together. Tie a knot. Continue the process until all of the cars of the train are connected.
