Paper Straw Bracelets

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/26FP10W Paper Straw Bracelets

Do your children love to make bracelets? Mine sure do! But sometimes, craft supplies can be expensive. That’s why I love to find ways for them to be creative without breaking the bank.

These simple Paper Straw Bracelets fit the bill! Colorful paper straws can be found in dollar sections of large stores or in bulk at party supply stores. They come in a variety of colors, patterns, and have many crafty uses!

Paper Straw Bracelets

For this craft, you will need string, scissors, paper straws, and a few smiling participants.

IMG_2094

Invite children to carefully cut the paper straws into beads of all sizes.

Next, cut a piece of cotton string or yarn to fit your child’s wrist. In fact—cut several! These bracelets look best in pairs.

IMG_2098

For younger children, it’s helpful to tie one straw bead to the end of the string. This will prevent beads from sliding off the string and onto the floor.

IMG_2100

Then kids can simply string their paper straw beads! Stringing beads is a great fine-motor skill. Kids can experiment with creating patterns.

IMG_2107

When children are finished stringing their beads, tie off the end with a double knot.

IMG_2111

I chose to snip off the extra “base” bead to create a completely round shape. Then I tucked the knot into a bead to hide it.

IMG_2112

These simple bracelets for kids are quite adorable! Best of all, since paper straws are so inexpensive, kids can make new bracelets for different holidays and seasons.

If the bracelet gets ruined, simply remove the string and toss the beads into the recycling bin.

Easy Mother’s Day Card Idea

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/24aUvC6 IMG_1727

Mother’s Day is just around the corner! Kids can make mom, grandma, or their motherly role-model feel special with a simple hand-made card. This easy mother’s day card idea uses basic craft supplies and recycled materials. Perfect for caring, eco-savvy kids!

IMG_1727

Easy Mother’s Day Card Idea

Every week, my family tosses vitamin bottles, medicine bottles, and milk and juice jugs into the recycling bin. The colorful caps from those bottles are often perfect for children’s crafts.

For our card, we decided to transform our collection of bottle caps into sweet flowers for Mom!

Materials Needed:

  • Plastic caps from empty bottles
  • Markers
  • White card stock
  • Glue

IMG_1709

First, instruct your child to fold the card stock in half.

Next, glue a bottle cap to the card stock. If your child wishes to create a bouquet of flowers, glue many bottle caps to the card stock. It’s fun to use a variety!

NOTE: Some bottle caps can be small. Please supervise small children around bottle caps.

IMG_1720

Draw the shape of flower petals around the bottle cap. Kids love getting creative with this part!

IMG_1723

Color in the flower petals. Make sure to add stems and leaves to the flowers.

IMG_1725

Invite your child to add more detail to their picture. My child chose to add a sun and grass! Then of course, he wrote “Happy Mother’s Day” at the top of his card.

Simple, sweet, and made with love!

Vegetarian Black Bean Burgers

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/26C8S0X vegetarian black bean burger

Even hardcore carnivores will love our Vegetarian Black Bean Burgers! Packed with healthy ingredients, texture, and tons of flavor you’ll want to make these vegetarian burgers a part of your regular menu. I have five children and ALL FIVE of them raved about these burgers.

Not ready to up your veggie game? Then try this yummy and kid favorite Sloppy Joes recipe.

vegetarian black bean burger

What makes these Vegetarian Black Bean Burgers so delicious is my aunt’s secret ingredient to wannabe meat: liquid smoke. My aunt grew up in a religion that encourages vegetarianism and she learned over the years that liquid smoke can trick even vegetarians into thinking there’s meat in the dish. Apparently, you don’t put liquid smoke into church potluck dishes…

Vegetarian Black Bean Burgers

Ingredients

  • 2 15 oz can of black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup red onion, minced
  • 5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup fresh broccoli, chopped very finely
  • 1 1/2 cups Panko bread crumbs
  • 1 cup grated parmesan
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 package Grill Mates Montreal Steak Marinade (.71 oz)
  • 1 TBSP liquid smoke
  • olive oil or other vegetable oil, for frying

Directions

In a medium bowl, mash black beans. Add all the remaining ingredients. Using clean hands, mix everything together. Mixture should be able to form and hold a patty together–if not, add more Panko bread crumbs.

Family Fun Secret Weapon

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/1rnpp8R family adventure on the mountain

I have three boys which means that we spend a lot of time outdoors!

I was once one of those moms who packed light and figured it would all work out.  And it usually does.  But that all changed on a simple walk through the forest.

family adventure on the mountain

Kids Activities Blog is excited to be partnering with Neosporin + Pain, Itch, Scar because as you will soon see, it is a really good fit for us!

We were in Colorado at a relative’s home.  We planned on staying for several weeks and exploring the surrounding area.

So many trails!

So little time.

Our favorite trail is a paved trail that parallels an amazingly gorgeous river.  Rocks, trees, flowers, wildlife, and so many other treasures.  It is the type of path you could go on daily and see something new every day.Family Adventure in Mountains

The path travels away from the parking area.  Something that had never occurred to me until this particular day.

We were walking and my three boys were running along the trail as boys do.  The paved area is great…but the adventure lies beyond.  They were traversing the river on fallen tree trunks and looking for bears (thankfully they were unsuccessful in that quest).

Rhett who was 8 at the time, saw a fallen tree that made a bridge up a hillside.  He jumped over to the base and started climbing up.  The trunk was covered with intact branches sticking out perpendicular to the trunk.  He tripped on one branch and fell into another splitting open his thigh.

There was screaming, blood and the realization that we were about a mile from our car.

I was a mile from the car with no first aid kit.

Thankfully, one of the hikers on the trail was more prepared than me.  He opened his backpack and found the things that I should have brought myself.  We ended up treating Rhett with a new Neosporin product called Neosporin + Pain, Itch, Scar, and I’m so glad one of the hikers had it on hand because it worked so well!  After some attention, some extra kisses and a little time. Rhett was able to walk for a bit and then piggyback ride for a bit.

What I learned that day was a very innocent walk can turn into something more serious, but I don’t want that to limit our adventure which is where preparation comes in!

NEOSPORIN secret family weaponNow I always keep Neosporin + Pain, Itch, Scar in my backpack or bag whenever we are headed, especially as we are gearing up for more spring and summer adventures.  In addition to preventing infection, it also provides pain and itch relief and minimizes the appearance of scars, so it is a great all-in-one product to keep around!

NEOSPORIN Pain Itch Scar

A big thanks to Neosporin + Pain, Itch, Scar for sponsoring this post and inspiring us to climb every mountain!  All opinions expressed are my own.

Rice Sensory Bin

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/24mZDQn Rice Sensory Bin

Have you ever set up a Rice Sensory Bin for your child? Rice is one of our favorite sensory materials. It has an incredibly soothing texture, making it perfect for unwinding play before bedtime.

Rice Sensory Bin

Rice Sensory Bin

One of the best things about using rice as sensory bin material is that it’s incredibly frugal! Simply pick up a bag of rice at your local wholesale club or grocery store, then dump it into a large plastic bin (approximately 2 feet long, 16 inches wide, and 1 foot deep).

Rice Sensory Bin

Kids love to search for small toys hidden in the rice! Scoops, empty bottles, trucks, toy animals—the options are endless! Filling a rice sensory bin with items for play need not be expensive. Items from the kitchen like funnels, pots, and wooden spoons are also entertaining for children!

Rice Sensory Bin

The rice in the bin pictured above was probably 3–4 inches deep. I thought it was fun to stick some items deep towards the bottom as a surprise.

If you want to use colored rice in the sensory bin, check out this easy tutorial for making neon rice or harvest colored rice. Those dying techniques could be used to make any colored rice you wish!

Rice Sensory Bin

Thankfully, my kids kept most of the rice in the bin! Any rice spills were easily cleaned up with a vacuum, but you could also put a sheet under the rice bin to collect spills. When play is over, simply pick up the sheet and pour the excess rice back into the bin.

This project is fun for older toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age kids, but is probably not ideal for babies who still mouth objects.

Keep an eye out for safety, and join in on the play too!
