Sometimes you just want to sit and color. I get it because I feel the same way. too.
Over the Winter Break, I have had a hankering to color with the kids. Plus, it’s on the list of Fun Things to Do Over Winter Break.
Especially over long winter vacations, coloring can be a great way to destress and reset moods. But hunting down all those winter coloring pages can take some doing.
So I decided to make a super quick resource of some Christmas and winter coloring pages for kids. I also made one for adults, because you all need some coloring time, too.
I bet you’ll be surprised how much you enjoy it. And how much the kids enjoy you coloring with them.
My kids have not always been into coloring. In fact, I wrote a post on what to do with crayons just because my kids wouldn’t ever use them to color!
But now, maybe they’re growing up and can sit for a bit, they actually enjoy it! All in good time, right?
One thing I learned: with toddlers, use washable markers! I highly recommend Crayola washable markers (affiliate link), they come out of everything!

Turn off the lights and get learning with a fun in the dark scavenger hunt for kids from Alisha!
When you’re stuck for ideas to keep the kids learning, but also have fun, it’s time to try this in the dark scavenger hunt.
Yup! Learning and hunting in the dark!
An all-ages light hunt learning game takes the learning fun to a whole new level because it’s played in the dark. Grab your flashlight and get ready to learn!
Keep scavenger hunting with more all-ages ideas for simple family fun!
To set up your own in the dark scavenger hunt, you’ll need:
Grab a few sheets of paper, enough for all the players.
I chose to start with two pieces of paper and the basic skills of letter and number recognition. This game is super flexible, so pick whatever content your kids are learning!
Try a twist on tic-tac-toe to practice learning skills too!
Fold each paper four times, into a small square. You should end with sixteen squares.
Trace the fold lines to turn the paper into the game board.
Make as many game boards as kids participating or skills you want to practice.
Then just add in the content to each square. I added letters to one board, uppercase and lowercase, and numbers to the other board.
Head into a dark room. Tape up your game boards anywhere on the walls, doors, or other flat surfaces.
Our dark room was the bathroom, so I taped them to the cabinets under the sink. Since they were low, my kids went did the in the dark scavenger hunt sitting down.
Challenge your children to shine their light onto target spaces, based on what you call out. To help you keep everything straight, you might want to make a copy of the boards.
My daughter was hunting for letters. When I said the letter “T” and she had to shine her flashlight on that letter.
My son played on the number board. When I said the number “110,” he had to shine the light on that number.
I found it best to instruct my kids one at a time, so they took turns hunting with their flashlights. We swapped back and forth, calling out squares on each child’s boards one at a time.
When it wasn’t their turn their light was off, as to not distract the other person playing.
We did try to do simultaneous hunts. They liked that, too!
You can choose to have your kids focus on one board only. Or switch after a while so they practice a variety of skills.
My kids even took over my role and began calling out letters and numbers for one another to find.
Use your flashlights to match blocks to shapes and shadows!
We love making learning into a game! It makes everything so much for fun and increases your child’s buy-in excitement, too.

Work on number recognition with a fun problem solving activity! Our Member of the Month, Shawna, shares her pom pom tunnels maze!
Gymnastics teacher and mom Shawna is super flexible. But finding time to actually plan and prep hands-on activities with her two girls was not happening as often as she wanted.
“I found myself on Pinterest of course, trying to find activities to do,” she explains. “Nine times out of ten, I have so many pins and barely touch any of them.”
Shawna had the ideas – and the Pins – ready to go. It was just about getting everything organized to actually do the activities!
“I would try to do certain things with the kids every once in a while, but in terms of actually following through and doing the activities, I didn’t do as many as I probably should have,” Shawna says.
Then, she spied an invitation to The Activity Room® on Facebook. And she decided to totally jump right in!
“I couldn’t wait to see what The Activity Room was going to bring.”
Now, her kids are 100% percent on-board with The Activity Room adventure. Their excitement is one major reason why Shawna decided to fully commit to hands-on activities with her children.
“They’re so happy, they’re so excited,” she shares. “They constantly ask me for activities! The girls love it and I love their faces and their expressions.”
The organization of The Activity Room is another major win for Shawna. She really struggled with getting things planned and organized for her Pinterest-found activities.
“The biggest struggle with activities was to get things organized to actually follow through to do it,” Shawna says. “I always have craft supplies here, it was just to follow through with it and making sure I was more planned for it.
“Knowing that it’s planned and prepped and organized – really you have no excuse now!”
Shawna is a ROOM superstar- owning the daily activities and finding creative ways to extend hands-on play!
“It also makes me think of other activities,” she shares. “It throws other ideas in my head and it makes me excited to do extensions and twists with them.”

Now with The Activity Room, I feel like an organized and prepared parent ready to make memories with my kids.
The kids are constantly asking for more. In addition, the activities that are planned in the Room have made me think of new twists to try with the kids to keep their interest.

We love creating – and solving – our own puzzles and mazes! Which is why my girls love this pom pom tunnels maze.
It’s a snap to throw together and doubles as a great fine motor activity, too!
To make your own pom pom tunnels maze, you’ll need:
Cut your paper towel rolls into multiple sections. Then, arrange them in an open box.
Glue each roll section down. Gluing inside of a small space is great for precision, motor planning, and creative use of tools.
How will your child handle the struggle of this prep work?
Place a Pom Pom in the box and move the box to get the pom pom through the tunnels. You can draw arrows or mark specific start/finish spots.
Another option is to leave it totally open-ended! Ask your kids – see what they’d prefer.

We did three containers of lava lamps. Three different colors, for triple the lava fun!
It took a lot of oil, though. I wish I had more on hand because I didn’t quite have 2/3 for each container.
The oil is essentially the lava lamp portion, so it would have been nice to have more of it. But it still worked!
I also wish I had clear oil on hand instead of vegetable oil. But I’m not sure what kind of oil besides baby oil is clear. Any suggestions?
Henry dropped in tablet after tablet. Over and over, watching it bubble up!
He used the entire box of Alka-Selzer just for this experiment!
The green one really captured his attention.
Maybe because it’s his favorite color. Or maybe because it was the tallest and skinniest, so it had the best reactions.

It was even interesting from the top of the bottles. Or, at least Henry thought so.
Once we were starting to run out of Alka-Selzer tablets, we started combining the colors and making them bubble together.
We were surprised to see that the colored bubbled remained separate!
Instead of red bubbles mixing with blue bubbles to make purple, everything stayed red or blue. Cool, huh?!?!

We tend to do a lot of science in our house, with tons of easy experiments happening all the time.
The boys love anything that fizzes and bubbles. We also really like this baking soda and colored vinegar science experiment for kids.
