Pasta noodles make for a great sensory bin play time for toddlers and preschoolers. Watch them learn and explore with their sense of touch and even sound.
For this sensory activity just set out a tub of dry pasta noodles along with several items to play with.
Set them out on a blanket, or even better would be a plastic shower curtain, to help contain the mess.
The blanket doesn’t only makes it easier for clean up. But it also sets boundaries with the sensory bin for the kids to keep the pasta in an area during play. (And not all over the entire house).
Of course, my boys immediately begin filling up the bottles with the pasta. Dumping them into each other and out again.
And then, repeat. Over and over.
Use the Pasta to Explore the Sense of Sound!
What I didn’t expect was the maracas that my boys made!
Once the bottles were full and lids tightly secured, the boys shook them and made noises!
The pasta sensory bin play time took a new turn!
Henry even did a little comparison to see how the pasta sounded different in each of the bottles.
I asked them, “Is this bottle quieter or louder when its shaken?”
And then, “Does the pasta sound higher or lower?”
As a result we turned this sensory activity into something other than for just the sense of touch, but for hearing too!
You can do this with any type of small container as long as you have a lit to close it with. Tupperware leftovers containers work great!
Cleaning up the pasta turned into Sensory Play too!
When it was time to clean up the sensory bin, my boys diligently scooped all the pasta noodles back into the large bottle again for storage.
During Dad stopped by and saw it was taking quite awhile and found a better solution.
A piece of paper as a funnel. It works slick and the boys just thought it was great that a piece of paper could be used for something other than writing on!

Have fun with this super simple shapes activity using bean bags + tape from our Member of the Month, Pam. Maybe even join her making your jazzy own DIY bean bags!
Oh, the intimidation of doing activities! Our member of the month, Pam, could easily find 1,000,001 different things to do with her son…
But, where do you start?
“Okay, that looks like fun, but where do I start? What do I do? How do I do it? And then it would just be like, Oh, I’m not doing it. I’ll just play cars.” Pam explained.
Pam is a working mom that only has a limited amount of time in her day to play and get the housework done.
One of Pam’s biggest struggles is staying engaged. Being interested in playing with her four year old son. It seems all he wants to do is play cars.
When he gets a little sidetracked, Pam takes advantage of the free moment to get something done around the house. But her son is quickly ready to play with her again, but she’s trying to finish up what she started.
Whereas, when she has a planned activity to do with her child after work, or on her days off, she becomes much more focused in on playing together.
“We’re doing it together. So we do it, and I don’t interrupt. That’s un-interrupted time.”
Pam experienced The Activity Room® through one of the free challenges.
“I thought I’d give it a shot, see what it was about and try it out. So I tried the week.” Pam shared. “That just gave me motivation to do so many things in a period of time and try them out.”
The activities found inside The Activity Room membership are so simple, and using the things you have at home, that’s Pam’s favorite part! Learning how to modify them to work for you, is even better.
Don’t miss out on Pam’s super simple and fun shapes activity with bean bags at the bottom of this post!
“It’s opened my mind to a lot of different ideas that I could do. Modifying some of the activities if you don’t have this. Instead of using, like sticks, you could use toothpicks,” says Pam.
“Finding what you have at home, doing the activity with what you have. You can modify them and change them and do what you want with them. “
And then she found the supportive Member Community.
The member community support helps Pam with getting these great ideas to modify the activities. However, it starts to become second nature really fast for members.
“The other thing I’ve really liked about The Activity Room is the online support group. Seeing other people’s pictures seeing what they’ve done.
And the fact that I don’t feel pressured. I don’t feel like it’s a competition. I’ve never felt that kind of pressure. I’ve never felt guilty about not posting enough or not being on enough.”
Since joining The Activity Room, after a couple of months, Pam has curated a drawer of useful supplies. Supplies that she actually continually uses in the activities. Rather than going out and buying one-off supplies for an activity here and there.
(Make sure to see how she uses these supplies to trouble-shoot her bean bag shapes toss activity below. No need to buy anything new for this activity.)
“And the stuff isn’t expensive, a lot of the stuff I find at the dollar store. And I don’t find that I’m spending more money because I’m doing cheaper stuff. Whereas before, I’d be thinking of what I can do and a lot of the times that would be like okay, well let’s go walk around the shop.”
And then, my son would want to buy a new car, so then I buy him a new car. So I would be buying more expensive toys. Whereas, the stuff that is on The Activity Room, you can make at home as opposed to going out and buying a kit.”
Pam is now the creative, fun mom that she has wanted to be. Spending less money on toys and gadgets trying to entertain her son. Instead she is spending the time together, bonding.
You can too. Start by trying her bean bag shapes activity below.
Pam lets us know, “I’m grateful to be part of such a great group. I’ve enjoyed it since I started. I’m very grateful and happy that I joined.”
Let’s Meet Pam!

Before The Activity Room, we were limited to what we did and had never done crafts at home. Now we paint, create and play.

Shapes Bean Bag Toss Activity:
A bean bag shapes activity that can easily be great indoors or outdoors.
Supplies needed for this shapes activity:
Bean bags
tape
We had to make our own bean bags, which was great for my son to help.
How do you make a kids bean bag?
First we got “bean bag” fabric and cut it into rectangles.
You can use any spare material you have around the house.
For example, some old jeans the kids grew out of, a thicker old pillowcase. Or even a variety of scraps to spice up this shapes activity!
Next we folded the rectangles on fabric in half and sewed 3 sides.
Then we turned them inside out and filled them with some beans.
Last we finished by sewing the remaining side shut.
Now that we had our bean bags we were ready to start the activity with the shapes!
We used tape to make shapes on the ground. Make as many as you want to. Stars, hearts, circles, diamonds etc.
Finally we tossed the bean bean bags into the shapes. So simple!
Try different ways to play this bean bag shape activity!
Call out a shape and then aim for it.
For older kids assign points to each shape and keep track. First one to 20 wins!
For younger kids call out the name of the shape after the bean bag lands.
