Work on number recognition with a fun problem solving activity! Our Member of the Month, Shawna, shares her pom pom tunnels maze!
Gymnastics teacher and mom Shawna is super flexible. But finding time to actually plan and prep hands-on activities with her two girls was not happening as often as she wanted.
“I found myself on Pinterest of course, trying to find activities to do,” she explains. “Nine times out of ten, I have so many pins and barely touch any of them.”
Shawna had the ideas – and the Pins – ready to go. It was just about getting everything organized to actually do the activities!
“I would try to do certain things with the kids every once in a while, but in terms of actually following through and doing the activities, I didn’t do as many as I probably should have,” Shawna says.
Then, she spied an invitation to The Activity Room® on Facebook. And she decided to totally jump right in!
“I couldn’t wait to see what The Activity Room was going to bring.”
Kids Love Hands-On Room Activities!
Now, her kids are 100% percent on-board with The Activity Room adventure. Their excitement is one major reason why Shawna decided to fully commit to hands-on activities with her children.
“They’re so happy, they’re so excited,” she shares. “They constantly ask me for activities! The girls love it and I love their faces and their expressions.”
The organization of The Activity Room is another major win for Shawna. She really struggled with getting things planned and organized for her Pinterest-found activities.
“The biggest struggle with activities was to get things organized to actually follow through to do it,” Shawna says. “I always have craft supplies here, it was just to follow through with it and making sure I was more planned for it.
“Knowing that it’s planned and prepped and organized – really you have no excuse now!”
Shawna is a ROOM superstar- owning the daily activities and finding creative ways to extend hands-on play!
“It also makes me think of other activities,” she shares. “It throws other ideas in my head and it makes me excited to do extensions and twists with them.”

The Activity Room is an amazing resource for all parents. Before The Activity Room, I would spend hours scrolling through Pinterest to find activities to do with kids to only do one or two things a month.
Now with The Activity Room, I feel like an organized and prepared parent ready to make memories with my kids.
The kids are constantly asking for more. In addition, the activities that are planned in the Room have made me think of new twists to try with the kids to keep their interest.

Simple Fun DIY Pom Pom Tunnels Maze for Kids
We love creating – and solving – our own puzzles and mazes! Which is why my girls love this pom pom tunnels maze.
It’s a snap to throw together and doubles as a great fine motor activity, too!
To make your own pom pom tunnels maze, you’ll need:
- Paper towel or toilet paper rolls
- Shoebox without the cover
- Pom poms
- Markers
Cut your paper towel rolls into multiple sections. Then, arrange them in an open box.
Glue each roll section down. Gluing inside of a small space is great for precision, motor planning, and creative use of tools.
How will your child handle the struggle of this prep work?
Place a Pom Pom in the box and move the box to get the pom pom through the tunnels. You can draw arrows or mark specific start/finish spots.
Another option is to leave it totally open-ended! Ask your kids – see what they’d prefer.
