This super simple winter big art painting project, from Lisa, is a fun hands-on art activity that all ages and stages will enjoy!

Creating big art is a fun way for kids to express themselves. Plus, it is such an easy and inexpensive activity – extra crucial during this busy time of year.

What will you create for your winter big art painting project for all ages? We love this creative art activity!

For this activity, I really wanted to use what we already had on hand. Simple projects are the best projects!

Try even more simple art projects that kids will love!

I gathered a few items from my craft cupboard that I thought fit best for our winter theme. Then we dove right into creating!

Creative Winter Big Art Painting Project for All Ages

We have fully stocked craft cupboard (most of the time), thanks to tips from our master Hands-On Mom, Jamie! Even if you don’t have everything on-hand right now, each item on my list could be substituted with what you do have or is super easy to find fast.

For your winter big art painting project, you’ll need:

  • A large roll of paper
  • Paint
  • Coffee Filters
  • Tin Foil
  • Glue
  • Recycled Paper Towel Tubes
  • Bubble Wrap
  • Elastic Bands
  • Dish Brushes/Scrub Sponges
  • Tape (optional)
Get creative with just a few crafting supplies from your hands-on activity supply closet!

I used the paper towel tubes to create roller brushes by taping the bubble wrap to one. For the second, I wrapped elastic bands around it.

I love creating non-traditional paintbrushes as they add such a big sensory component to the project!

We also used the dish brush and scrubbers for even more creative, cool ways to make winter big art.

I took our large roll of paper and rolled it out on our table. To prevent movement, I suggest you tape it down firmly.

My children requested a giant winter tree that they could paint and decorate. I sketched the basic outline before I squirted the paint.

Really, anything winter-themed would work: mittens, snowpeople, snowflakes, stars – let your imagination be the limit! You could even leave it blank to allow them to create their own scene.

Next, I squirted different colors of paint all over, overlapping and layering them.

Get creative as your children explore art through non-traditional painting tools!

Simple and ready in under 5 minutes!

My kids loved experimenting with the different items to paint with as well as seeing the different texture that each one created on paper.

This would be a great time for you to jump in with “I wonder what would happen if” questions. Like: “I wonder what would happen if you tapped the scrub brush instead of rubbing it around?”

Kids can create this winter big art painting project together!

They had so much fun spreading the paint around together!

Add Some Sparkle to Your Winter Big Art Painting Project

Once they had finished with the paint, they decided to add some more texture to their painting through a different medium. They wanted it to be truly 3D.

We added in tin foil and coffee filters for the 3D pop plus some neat textural differences. It’s what we had, but you could try different materials based on what’s in your supply closet.

Add tin foil or other materials to make your art 3D!

My oldest covered the tree with white glue (which he loved!) while my younger two used fine motor skills to tear the tin foil into little pieces.

The little tin foil scraps looked like stars and ornament balls. And the coffee filters looked like giant, fluffy snowflakes.

I love how simple materials just add to the finished product!

Why Big Art?

Creating big art is such a great activity for children to create together. It encourages social and co-regulation skills.

Create a cool scene or abstract image with a winter big art painting project for all ages and stages!

As we’ve done more big art projects through the years, I’ve noticed the cool conversations my children have with each other.

Playing with words is another fun way to play and learn together!

They talk about the next steps, the plan for the final project, and delegate responsibility equally.

Throughout the entire experience, they’re laughing together, creating art, and making memories!

Our winter art turned out so pretty and my children love the freedom to create with large scale projects like this.

Decorate for the holidays with a creative art project that kids can make together!
