When you hear the words Sloppy Joe, it brings back such great childhood memories. What could be better than eating something that is designed to be messy! It’s the perfect kid friendly meal!
While the Sloppy Joe recipe has evolved over time, a few ingredients remain the same. My Sloppy Joes are a little different because I add rice! Yes rice!
As I said, there are certain ingredients that make a Sloppy Joe the classic recipe that it is today. And without these ingredients, it wouldn’t be a Sloppy Joe.
Here’s what you need:
Sloppy Joes
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 pounds Hamburger meat – browned
- 2 cans (15 oz) Tomato Sauce
- 1 stalk Celery, diced
- 1/2 large Onion, diced
- 1/4 cup Brown Rice, uncooked
- 1 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 3/4 teaspoon Pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon Chili Powder
Directions:
- In a large skillet, brown hamburger meat
- Once browned, add the rest of the ingredients to the skillet
- Mix together and cook on low for 30-40 minutes until the celery, rice and onions are softened
- Serve on a bun or by itself
So here’s what it looks like.
Brown about 1 and a half pounds of hamburger meat first. Make sure you use a large skillet so you can fit the rest of the ingredients in the same pan as the meat.
Once browned, you will add the rest of the ingredients including the celery, onions, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, chili powder and uncooked rice.
We add rice to our Sloppy Joes to give it some weight and thickness. The rice also helps bind the rest of the ingredients.
Once you mix everything together you will cook on low for 30-40 minutes. Since the meat is already cooked, you are essentially waiting for the rice, onions and celery to cook. Once each is softened, it’s ready!
Of course the only way to eat a Sloppy Joe is to use a hamburger bun or roll. You want to make sure your Sloppy Joe is spilling over the bun! You can always eat it without a bun — but that’s no fun!
Enjoy!
