A-MAZE-ing Way to Learn a Letter

Hands On As We Grow http://ift.tt/2mMnu00

Click here to read A-MAZE-ing Way to Learn a Letter on Hands On As We Grow

This has got to be one of my favorite go-to activities to learn a letter. We do this over and over again with different letters to really get to know a specific letter.

You can find an entire week of activities to learn any letter here.

For this a-MAZE-ing letter activity, all you need is painter’s tape (affiliate link), a marker and a car (or something for your child to push through the maze).

The hardest part is setting up the maze, but once you get into a rhythm is really isn’t too tough.

This is such a simple and fun maze activity for learning letters or numbers!

Making the Maze

First, I make the correct path through the maze with the tape. I use the tape as the maze path (not the borders of the path, so there’s no need to tape two lines side by side to make a road).

I do it all as right angles, making sure to make it zig zag back and forth, and not just straight forward. Once the correct path is taped in place, I go through and write the letter we’re working on (in this case G) on all the corners, as well as the start and finish points.

This is such a simple and fun maze activity for learning letters or numbers!

Then I use the tape to make a bunch of  dead ends and mark the corners with the ‘wrong letters’ (anything but G). I usually end up making a long rectangle for the maze, but it can be any shape.

This is such a simple and fun maze activity for learning letters or numbers!

Have your child start at the beginning, point out the letter you’re working on. Tell it to them.

This is such a simple and fun maze activity for learning letters or numbers!

“This is the letter G. We’re going to drive your car to the next letter G and then the next letter G until we make it to the finish!”

This is such a simple and fun maze activity for learning letters or numbers!

We have done this activity in the past with the entire alphabet, too. If your child already is familiar with the letters, you can work on the ABC order.

This is such a simple and fun maze activity for learning letters or numbers!

It’s A-MAZE-ingly versatile, too!

And this activity doesn’t have to be limited to just letters. You can apply it to whatever it is you’re working on. Some ideas:

  • Use this maze to learn a number. Use the same setup, just replace the letter with a number.
  • Use this maze activity to work on addition. Write addition equations to all equal the same number as the correct path. Follow the addition equations that equal 10, and use 6+4, 3+7, 2+8 and so on.
  • Use this maze activity with other math problems, multiplication, subtraction or division will all work.
  • Use this maze activity for shape recognition. Same setup, just replace with shapes!
  • Use this maze activity to work on color recognition. You can use different colored markers, colored stickers, or even little pieces of construction paper taped onto the corners.

This is such a simple and fun maze activity for learning letters or numbers!

Whatever it is that you do, make sure that it’s something you’re child is interested in. If they’re just grasping some letters, you can do this first with a letter they know and then use another piece of painter’s tape to stick a new letter over the correct path.

This is such a simple and fun maze activity for learning letters or numbers!

Also, if you’re child isn’t into cars or trucks, what else could you use? A doll could walk through the maze. The child could walk through the maze themselves. You could also roll a marble through the maze, or a pom pom.

Try to include something that your child can’t put down right now to get them interested!

What did your child learn with this maze activity?

Cardboard Tube Easter Bunny

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/2o22h1S

Kids of all ages will love making a Cardboard Tube Easter Bunny for Easter. This simple craft requires minimal supplies and is perfect for home, school or daycare.

Cardboard Tube Easter Bunny

Cardboard Tube Easter Bunny

Looking for an easy and fun Easter craft for kids? Look no further! Kids love to make cardboard tube characters for imaginative play. This simple craft is also easy to convert into a puppet by adding a long, wooden craft stick to the inside of the tube.

We made a pink bunny, but cardboard tubes are easily painted. I think it would be fun to make several in many spring colors!

Cardboard Tube Easter Bunny

To make this craft you will need

  • cardboard tubes
  • wiggly eyes
  • construction paper
  • pipe cleaners
  • pom poms
  • glue
  • scissors
  • black permanent marker

Directions

After gathering supplies, invite kids to cut ears for their bunny from the construction paper. We used 2 pieces of construction paper to give our bunnies an inner and outer ear.

Tip: You may want to draw ears for younger kids to cut out.

Cardboard Tube Easter Bunny

Glue the bunny’s ears to the front of the cardboard tube.

Cardboard Tube Easter Bunny

Glue a little pom pom to the top of the cardboard tube to make a little nose for the bunny. Draw whiskers and a little smile with a black permanent marker.

Cardboard Tube Easter Bunny

Next, glue 2 wiggly eyes above the bunny’s nose. Last, glue a pom pom to the back of the cardboard tube for the bunny’s tail. Kids will have a blast hoppity-hopping their little bunny all around!

DIY Moon Rocks

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/2n9cHrO

As a child, I always wanted to see a Moon Rock. There’s just something fascinating about the moon and outer space. So when my son started asking questions about that big ol’ rock in the sky, I decided to make our own version with these DIY Moon Rocks.

This easy play recipe takes some Moon Sand and adds a bit more moisture to make it moldable to form into rocks. We made them  black with some shiny glitter to simulate the sun reflecting off the surface of the moon.

DIY Moon Rocks KAB

DIY Moon Rocks

What you need to make DIY Moon Rocks:

  • 4 cups baking soda
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Gold and Silver glitter
  • Black food coloring

In a large plastic bin, mix together the baking soda and water. Add lots of glitter and some food coloring and stir together.

You can let your kids explore this easy Moon Sand for a bit (warning: their hands will get messy because of the food coloring!), or you can go right to making your rocks.

Mold the sand with your hand to shape it into rocks. We pressed our fingers into it to form craters on the surface.

Allow to dry overnight.

The rocks will be brittle, but kids will love examining them!

They’re much prettier than the Moon Rocks retrieved by astronauts aboard the six landing Apollo missions. Those rocks are stored  at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

My son loved learning about the rocks, and how they have to be kept in Nitrogen so that they won’t get moisture. We talked about how adding moisture to the Moon Rocks would change their composition and cause them to fall apart. We even tried adding some water to our own DIY Moon Rocks!

Now that you’ve made Moon Rocks, share photos with us on our Facebook page. Then, head over to our blog for even more  space activities for kids!

Magic Finger Surface Tension Experiment for Kids

Hands On As We Grow http://ift.tt/2nEQSEy

Click here to read Magic Finger Surface Tension Experiment for Kids on Hands On As We Grow

Alisha shares this super simple surface tension science experiment for kids will leave your kiddos amazed!

In my home, we call this the Magic Finger trick. It’s a great way to get your toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged kiddos interested in the wonders and joys of science.

Best part – there’s no setup!

Here are 30 other great experiments to do with your preschooler!

This surface tension experiment for kids is a perfect way to introduce little ones to science... and make them think you can do magic.

You only need three supplies for this surface tension experiment; all of the items are found in your kitchen.

  • Dish Soap
  • A bowl of water
  • Pepper

This surface tension experiment for kids is a perfect way to introduce little ones to science... and make them think you can do magic.

Begin by grabbing a bowl from your cabinet and fill it up with water at least half way.

Next, sprinkle some pepper into the bowl of water. Use enough pepper to cover the top of the water.

This surface tension experiment for kids is a perfect way to introduce little ones to science... and make them think you can do magic.

Then, prepare your kiddos for the amazement that is about to occur.

Simply put some dish soap on the tip of your finger and touch the middle of the water.

VoilĂ !

This surface tension experiment for kids is a perfect way to introduce little ones to science... and make them think you can do magic.

Your little ones might think it is magic…

…but in fact there is real science behind the experiment.

When the soap touches the water, the surface tension changes, and the pepper no longer floats on top. But the water molecules still want to keep the surface tension, so they pull back away from the soap, and carry the pepper along with them.

After doing the experiment and talking about surface tension, let your kiddos take a turn using their magic finger.

Here are some great water activities for toddlers!

An extension of this surface tension experiment for kids would be to try other objects on the water.

  • Would rice react the same way as the pepper?
  • Would pom poms (affiliate link) be too big to react to the surface tension change?

Did you find any other items that reacted the same way as the pepper?
