Make Watercolor Art with Markers

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/1Rli5n3

It is so easy to  make watercolor art with markers. In fact, it’s one of my son’s favorite ways to paint without painting.

You only need three supplies for this simple craft, and your child’s imagination is the limit. They get to create a drawing, then transform it into gorgeous art with science.

Watercolor Art Made with Markers

Make Watercolor Art With Markers

Here’s what you need to make watercolor art with markers:

  • Watercolor paper
  • Washable markers
  • Spray bottle with water inside

Allow your child to draw on the watercolor paper using the markers. Any design works — scribbles, shades of solid colors. We found that creating colors close together made more colorful watercolor art than elaborate designs.

Once your marker drawing is done, lay the paper on a flat surface and spray with water. Allow to sit and dry, watching the colors run as your new artwork is created!

Mud-Like Coffee PlayDough

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/1ph5XV3 Mud-Like Coffee PlayDough

This post is in honor of International Mud Day… whoever made the last Wednesday of June “mud-day” does not live in Texas.   The heat index was 107 yesterday and it’s dry, very dry… while we LOVE mud and LOVE playing outside, this is just not the time of year for outdoor play (well, after 8:30 in the morning.     Our neighbors must love us).   So we decided to bring our love of mud inside in the form of playdough, yummy smelling coffee playdough.   I wake up just sniffing this stuff!

Mud-Like Coffee PlayDough

Coffee PlayDough Recipe.

This recipe was adapted from the basic playdough recipe found on Anna’s site, The Imagination Tree:

  • coffee playdough recipe2 Cups of Flour
  • 1/2 Cup of Coffee Grounds
  • 1 Tablespoon of Instant Coffee (when it wasn’t dark enough)
  • 1 Cup of Salt
  • 2 Teaspoons of Cream of Tartar (she called for more, but this stuff is hard to find, so I cut the amount by a third).
  • 1 Cup of very hot water
  • 2 Tablespoons of oil

Mud-Like Coffee PlayDough

Anna also called for glycerin drops.   We didn’t have any “drops” but I shaved a tiny piece off of a bar of soap.   Glycerin Soap bars are the clear or see-through kind.   A little bit goes a long way.

Mix the dry ingredients.   Add the wet, stir bunches.   Let it sit for awhile to thicken, then stir some more.

Do you want to win some of my playdough or other stuff we make?   Occasionally, I do facebook-only giveaways (like yesterday) and one lucky facebook fan won a portion of this batch of coffee playdough!   Follow the Quirky Momma facebook page to learn about some of my favorite sites and all the activities that are on my to-do list…   I love connecting with you, my readers, on there!

… And, if you like mud, come back tomorrow!   We will feature a collection of some muddy ideas discovered from some of my favorite sites.

Ziploc Fudge in a Baggie

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/1JuTpC5 Ziploc Fudge in a Baggie

Ziploc Fudge in a baggie is one of my favorite treats to make because it is just what it sounds like — fudge made in a ziplock baggie!

My son loves to help make it. He’s an expert at squishing all the ingredients together to create this creamy fudge.

Ziploc Fudge in a Baggie

Ziploc Fudge in a Baggie

Here’s what you need to make Ziploc Fudge in a Baggie:

  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2/3 c unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 lb. powdered sugar
  • 1 gallon-sized Ziploc bag

Cover a plate with aluminum foil and set aside.

In the Ziploc bag, combine the butter, cream cheese and vanilla. Squish the bag to mix well. Add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar and squish to mix.

Scoop the fudge onto the paper plate and allow to harden. I like to put mine in the freezer to speed up the process.

Cut and serve!

This fudge would be an awesome gift idea with some homemade candy treats.

3 Ways to Make 2017 Better for Your Family

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/2iswRMh Family Goals 2017 - Invisalign

I am an Invisalign Teen® brand spokesperson and all opinions expressed are my own. Full disclosure.

As a parent, it can be easy to get caught up with the day-to-day details and lose sight of the big picture of life.  One of the things I love about the new year is that it seems to refocus me back on what is important.

Family Goals 2017 - Invisalign

This year I want to concentrate on three things that could make 2017 the best year for my family…ever!

Family Game Night

Our family loves to play games – cards, board games, video games, anything!  My three boys are 11, 13 & 15 and although spending time with mom and dad isn’t something they would admit to loving, I have never seen them turn down the offer of a game!

I want to leverage this competitive nature for the good of our family.  I adore the trash-talking, collective strategy and family time that game night brings.  Recently, I have just let this happen organically and it just hasn’t been frequent or consistent.

In 2017, I am adding family game night to our calendar because it is THAT important!

Hygiene, Hygiene, Hygiene

When the kids were younger, it was easy to make sure they were clean, their teeth were brushed and behind their ears were scrubbed…because it was up to me to make it happen!

Now that they are older and independent in these tasks, it has been easy to take focus off of the importance of these unless someone STINKS!  But it is my duty to make sure they go out into this world with good habits.  Not only so they don’t stink, but because it can keep them healthier.

One thing I will be stressing in 2017 is good oral health.  This means stressing the importance {and follow-through} of brushing and flossing.  One of my kids is already in braces and the next one will be starting with Invisalign Teen® clear aligners.  I love that the clear aligners are removable, so he can get proper brushing and flossing in and he’ll have no food restrictions to worry about either.  I also love that Invisalign technology has become so advanced that they’re able to treat minor to complex cases, so it’s definitely worth getting a consultation if you’ve considered traditional braces for your teen.

I recently finished up my Invisalign treatment and am so happy with the results.  The amazing thing is that they are virtually invisible – my family had forgotten I was even wearing them!

Gathering Friends & Family

I am adding one more thing to my calendar in 2017.  It will be a specific time to make sure we are seeing friends and extended family.  Life goes by so quickly! It is easy to go one, two, three months without hugging someone dear in person!  I don’t want that for our future.

Join me in making 2017 a year of connection!

Classic Craft: Making Paper Bag Puppets

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/1wH7MLN Classic Craft: Making Paper Bag Puppets by Amanda Formaro

This classic craft has been around for years. It’s one that has stood the test of time, even if it has changed or evolved over time. Paper bag puppets are easy to make and really fun for kids to play with. Whether it’s just markers you create your puppets with or you decorate with yarn, paper and buttons, they’re a great project any time.

Making Classic Paper Bag Puppets

Paper bag puppets are perfect for pretend play. Kids can play by themselves, with a friend or sibling or even with a group of friends.

Classic Craft: Making Paper Bag Puppets by Amanda Formaro

They can host their very own puppet show and all you need to start with is a simple paper bag.

Classic Craft: Making Paper Bag Puppets by Amanda Formaro

You will need:

  • Paper lunch bag
  • Markers
  • Construction paper and/or scrapbook paper
  • Googly eyes
  • Pom pom
  • Yarn
  • Ribbon
  • Tools: glue stick, scissors and white craft glue

Classic Craft: Making Paper Bag Puppets by Amanda Formaro

Making the faces is the fun part! Let your kids use glue and yarn to create hair. They can make pig tails by tying several yarn strands together with a piece of ribbon. Cheeks can be make using markers or pink crayon, I ™ve used circles I cut from pink construction paper. Medium pom poms make great noses, and googly eyes will finish off the face. Look for the googly eyes with lashes for girl puppets!

Classic Craft: Making Paper Bag Puppets by Amanda Formaro

Dressing them up is just as fun as giving their face some character. Use scrapbook paper to create simple clothes, ribbon makes great collar trim! Once the clothes are glued in place, trim off the excess, being careful not to cut the bag.

Classic Craft: Making Paper Bag Puppets by Amanda Formaro

Boys might like this spiked hair cut. Simply cut yarn into short strands and glue to the top of the bag. Remember, decorating is part of the fun, so let them have a ball!
