I love making Halloween crafts with the kids! I’m not sure why, but its close behind Christmas crafts and making crafts for Valentine’s Day.
We haven’t even gotten a chance to decorate with pumpkins yet, but have gotten a good start for Halloween with the spiral ghost craft we made and reading in a Halloween fort!
Now we’ve lit up the buffet with these light up ghosts! A simple craft made with empty creamer bottles.
These light up ghosts are one of the 15 ghost crafts for kids to make for Halloween.
As you may already know, I love upcycling our trash into free activities. My creamer bottles alone have been turned into vases, telescopes, sorting cups, catching toy, sand and water scoops, and a fine motor activity.
This is another cute one to add to the list of many things you can reuse those bottles for, so don’t throw them away! Soon I’ll have something to make for every month of the year!
To make our light up ghosts, I first cut out the bottom of the empty bottles with a knife and scissors. I always need to start with a knife to poke in until I can get the scissors through the hole. Since its such a small area, the kids’ scissors actually works great for this!
I drew a face on the first bottle to show the boys what a ghost face can look like. Two eyes and a long mouth.
Henry and George both drew ghost faces on their empty bottles with a black Sharpie marker. It’s a special day when they get to use Sharpies!
Henry was very detailed with his face. He added eyebrows and a nose on his ghost.
George did awesome. He’s still mastering the art of writing and drawing and everything is enlarged. I love seeing the difference in a beginner writer like George and Henry who is learning to be more precise and tightening up his drawings, as well as his handwriting.
I drew another ghost so Louis would have one too. We ended up with four ghosts to light up!
And then I didn’t have a votive candles, so the boys had to wait and wait until I finally found some in the back of a cabinet a few days later.
I lit the candles and placed the ghost bottles over them.
Ta-da! So fun and festive for Halloween!
Instead of just lit up Jack-O-Lanterns this year, we’ll have light up ghosts too! And these don’t rot.
I used real votive candles to light up our ghosts. They did not get hot enough to melt the plastic of the bottle which was my first concern. I soon realized that I should have put the votives on something that I didn’t care to get wax all over. The candles melted all over my buffet runner. I placed them on paper plates then and all has been fine.
