I’ve seen some beautiful ice wreaths and thought we should make our own. Except that our ground is completely covered in snow and it’s been just too dang cold to go out and scrounge up some bits of nature to include in one.
Instead, we made our ice wreath a bird feeder. I know, we already made a bird feeder craft, but I couldn’t resist another one!
Cool Ice Wreath Bird Feeder Craft Kids Can Make
Really, this is a simple craft and can use whatever grains you have on hand. To DIY your own ice wreath bird feeder, you can use:
shelf-stable grains: oatmeal, rice, quinoa
seeds: pumpkins, sunflower
cereal: cornflakes, un-frosted shredded wheat
water
bundt pan mold
mixing bowl
I emptied out our pantry to get rid of some of the odds and ends boxes of goods and dumped them in a bowl.
We ended up with some corn flakes, french fried onions, brown rice, and oatmeal. And just for all of you that think rice is bad for birds, read this – its a myth.
We made our ice wreath in a bundt pan.
George simply dumped each of the dishes into the pan and spread them around however he wished. Pretty easy.
Then we filled it with water.
Kids love pouring water – and it works hand-eye coordination too!
Oops! Not in the hole of the pan.
Pour the water around the pan on top of all the goodies!
Then we quickly snuck outside to put it on the porch to freeze.
It was one of the sub-zero days we had, so it didn’t take long at all to freeze.
If you happen to not be dipping below zero, pop your bundt pan into the actual freezer.
A couple of hours later, we checked and our ice wreath bird feeder was frozen. George was so excited when I took it out of the pan!
To get your ice wreath bird feeder out of the cake mold, rest it in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes. It should slip out easily!
Feed the Birds in Your Backyard
I tied the bird feeder up with a ribbon to hang for the winter. I hope it makes it!
We’ve since had some warmer days where it was just barely freezing and it’s dripped a bit.
That’s why I wanted to use completely edible parts. Even though it would be so pretty with some ribbons and sequins in it!
If you do have access to some bits and pieces of nature, I highly recommend checking out Red Ted Art’s nature ice ornaments that are absolutely stunning. Or use actual birdseed for ornaments too, at Henry Happened.

Grab some blocks for this zero prep fine motor activity for toddlers!
Toddlers just love blocks! Add in an everyday item such as your kitchen tongs for a fun and exciting no prep fine motor toddler activity.
No Prep Block Pick-Up Fine Motor Toddler Activity
Block activities have been a top choice for the boys lately. But cleaning up the blocks really isn’t their favorite.
Honestly, this activity kind of just came to me as a way to occupy the boys so I could do a few other things. But it turned into a creative way to cleanup toys without fighting!
Set up your own fine motor toddler activity with:
blocks
kitchen tongs
a container or two
And that’s it!
First, I set out all the blocks in one container, with another bucket nearby.
I handed George my tongs and challenged him to move all the blocks to the empty container.
We just used the standard wooden blocks(affiliate link) that come in all sorts of shapes and colors. But any type of block that you have would work, like your Mega Bloks(affiliate link) or even Bristle Blocks(affiliate link).
We used a tall skinny container as our empty container, the one to put the blocks into with tongs. I think that made it more fun than just a regular old box.
Tong Transfering Works Toddler Hand Strength
George struggled from time to time with using the tongs. It kept locking shut with the clasp.
But he thought he was pretty clever when he was able to grab a block!
And he did use his hands to help out too!
Whether he was closing the tongs with one or both hands, it was strengthening his hands either way.
George has always had amazing fine motor skills for his age. The grasp he has on a pencil has always surprised me, even at 18 months.
Such a vast difference from his older brother who excelled in gross motor skills very early on.
It makes me wonder what Louis will excel in? One of my kids has to like to sing and dance, right?

Almost one year ago, our MOTM Shauna described herself as kind of a one-trick pony. She and her six grandkids were focused on just one or two main activities – doing them over and over again.
“I had a lot of play dough,” she laughs “That was kind of the main thing that we did.”
Then, Shauna found The Activity Room on Pinterest. The multi-level, highly adaptable activity plans sparked her interest and she jumped in last January.
“When I joinedThe Activity RoomI was really just looking to include all the different developmental levels in the activity plan,” Shauna says.
Finding something that all of her grandkids, from age 7 to younger toddler, could enjoy was a major struggle. It was made doubly hard since some of Shauna’s grandchildren are diagnosed with apraxia, autism, and deafness.
“One of my biggest struggles with doing activities is just the different levels of the kid and trying to incorporate it so they all have fun and are all engaged in the activity.”
Meeting Different Needs with Simple, Adaptable Activities!
Now, Shauna is easily able to adapt one activity to meet the needs of all of the kids! She can quickly simplify or add an extra challenge to almost any ROOM activity on the schedule.
“Being a gramma of 3 “different abilities children” I love that the activity plans are holistic in its developmental approach,” Shauna explains. “The activities are simple enough that you can twist them up, spice them up, size them up or down, or just do the activity as given, to fit the needs of all the kids and families. “
Having easy to do activities helps Shauna (and all of our Activity Room Members) make precious memories with the kids in her life!
“I love the time with them, creating memories and just having fun with them. All of us benefit from (The Activity Room) and we just love getting together!”
Let’s Meet Shauna
How many kids do you have and how old are they?
I have 6 grandkids ages 8, 5, 4, 3, 9 mo, and 6 mo
How long have you been in The Activity Room?
I joined The Activity Room® January 2019
What is your favorite activity you’ve done in The Activity Room?
It is impossible to choose a favorite activity! Every week we have a new favorite.
But my boys loved the kerplunk game the best and became very strategic in their efforts. My oldest granddaughter loves everything creative and crafty, while the youngest gravitates more to the sensory and gross motor type activities
What’s your favorite thing to do with your kids when you get a few moments?
Being grandma, I enjoy every last minute. Unlike my days of being a parent, for the most part, my time with them is all about them.
I love being Gramma!
What’s your best tip for doing activities with your kids?
Let the child lead the activities.
Don’t have expectations, and don’t compare them to any other child. Praise them for their accomplishments and efforts, always.
If you were to tell a friend about The Activity Room, what would you say to them?
The Activity Room is an amazing tool to me help and engage my kiddos in learning new skills! Before The Activity Room, I was stuck on play dough and an invitation to creates “Pinterest style.”
Now with The Activity Room, the kids are enjoying the activities so much more because of the variety!

Easy DIY Filled Christmas Ornament Craft for Kids!
I love the sweet holiday tradition of adding a personalized ornament to the tree every year. It’s even better when kids can make their own – to keep or gift to loved ones!
To make your own easy filled Christmas ornament, you’ll need:
clear plastic Christmas ornaments with tops that can be taken off and replaced
red & green holiday confetti
red, white & green pom poms
jingle bells
bows
ribbons
other Christmas-themed supplies
plate or ice cube tray (optional)
Sharpie markers (optional)
paint (optional)
To start, pop the tops off of the ornaments. Do a quick test to make sure they will actually go back on, too!
Give each child a plate or ice cube tray with all the Christmas crafting supplies in it. My kids liked to have the ice cube tray because it kept all the different kinds of crafty things separated.
You might need to demonstrate how to fill the ornament. Show how to choose and place each craft item into your demo ornament.
Then let them get creative! It’s so much fun to see how they create their own custom filled Christmas ornaments.
When they’re done, pop the tops back onto each ornament. You might consider writing their name and the year onto each one, too.
Or for really crafty/skilled kids, you could let them paint small designs or messages on the outside.
What are your favorite Christmas crafts to make with kids? We’d love to try some of your ideas!
