Get ready for the winter holidays with a festive Christmas countdown chain full of activities to do with kids!

December is right around the corner and it’s time to start our countdown to Christmas!

This year we made a simple paper chain that holds a fun and festive activity for each day until Christmas.

It’s sure to fill the days until Christmas with joy and laughter!

Build a cute and festive Christmas countdown chain for kids!

Cute & Festive Christmas Countdown Chain for Kids!

This is such an easy idea. The hard part, honestly, will be committing to do the activities each day.

Learn how to get over your biggest hands-on activities hurdles!

To DIY your own festive Christmas countdown chain, you’ll need:

  • 3 pieces of 12 x 12 scrapbook paper – red, green and gold
  • ruler
  • pen or pencil
  • scissors
  • stapler

Make a Holiday Activity Master List

First, draw lines 1.5 inches apart on scrapbook or construction paper. You should be able to make 8 links per piece of paper, making a total of 24 strips.

Kids can practice scissor skills cutting out the links. I love a good scissors skills activity!

Brainstorm your favorite Christmas or winter activities from previous years. Make a giant list and then write one activity on each link.

Write down your favorite holiday activities!

Get the Kids Involved in Making Christmas Magic

Preschoolers and older kids can cut the strips apart.

My preschooler is just learning to follow the lines while cutting. He veered off a couple of times, but it’s easily fixed with some scotch tape.

Work on scissor skills, cutting out links for a holiday activity chain

After all the strips are cut, the kids can create a pattern and link them together.

An adult, or another child, can hold the link in place while your child staples it. You could also use tape to close each link.

Make a festive Christmas countdown chain with your kids!

Then hang it up–it can also add to your Christmas decorations.

Remove a link every day until Christmas.

Have a blast doing all sorts of Christmas activities together!

Celebrate the holidays by doing one special activity every day until December 25!

Kids will love to count the chains each day to see just how many more days until Christmas!

How does your family get ready for the holidays? We’d love to try some of your best memory-creating activities!
