Back to school can be a tough time for both kids, parents, and teachers.
Transitions are tricky, especially for younger kids. It’s hard to let summer go!
Thankfully, there are tons of back to school tips for parents that will help your child make the switch as smoothly as possible.
One of our favorite tips is to create a back to school countdown. This simple art project will help get your child in the mood for school!
How to Make a Back to School Countdown Art Project
This art project is low-prep and your preschool or grade school child will love it!
For This Back to School Countdown Art Project, You’ll Need:
- Art paper
- Crayons, colored pencils, or markers
- Black construction paper
- White crayon
- Glue
- Scissors
Draw Your House and School as Start and End Points for the Countdown
First, we drew boxes at opposite corners of the paper.
Then in the top box, have your child draw and color a picture of their house.
Ask questions to encourage more details in their drawing. “What color is your house? Do you have any plants growing in your yard? What does your front door look like?”
Next, let your child draw a picture of their school in the bottom corner.
If your child is returning to the same school then ask them what they remember about their school.
If your child is going to a new school, this countdown is a great way to introduce them to what the campus will look like!
Find a photo of the school online and then you can discuss things you like about the school. “I really like those brightly colored doors! Look at the cool mural of the school mascot!”
Previewing and drawing their school ahead of time may help ease the transition to a new school.

Create the “Road” to School for the Countdown
Now that your child has drawn his home and school, it’s time to connect the two!
Take a large piece of black construction paper and cut it into squares.
With a white crayon, draw numbers on the squares.
My son wrote the numbers 1-7 to countdown the week before school starts.
However, you can make the countdown to school as long or short as you like!
Glue the squares, starting with the highest number up top by the house.
Create a curvy road from the house to school with a black crayon connecting the numbers!
And finally add an arrow at the end pointing to the school.
This cute book countdown is another fun way for preschoolers to count down to school!
Count Down the Days Until School Starts!
Your back to school countdown is ready!
When the days come, we place tiny race car stickers on the road.
