Helping kids learn beginning letter sounds is one of those skills that is so easy to incorporate into everyday life. This super simple game is no exception!
Practice Beginning Letter Sounds Scavenger Hunt Game
To play this super easy game to practice beginning letter sounds, you will need:
- a book or magazine with really detailed illustrations
- paper and pencil
The objective of this game is to find something on the page that begins with each letter of the alphabet.
It is a kind of scavenger hunt, but the only place you are hunting is a book (or magazine)!
Setting up Your Scavenger Hunt
To get started with this game, go find a book that has fun and detailed illustrations.
You want there to be plenty to choose from when hunting for all of the beginning letter sounds.
The more that is on a page, the better! We chose a page from one of our past Highlights magazine issues.
Next, list the letters A through Z on a piece of paper.
If your child is practicing writing their letters, let them help!

Time to Play Practice Letter Sounds Scavenger Hunt
From here, you have a few choices.
You can work on two teams, adult versus child, for an older kid who can write independently.
Alternatively, do it as one big team and challenge yourselves to get as many words as you can.
Set a timer to increase the excitement!
My oldest kids are 4 and 6, so they were on a team together.
My 6 year old did the writing, which was good inventive spelling practice since she couldn’t ask for help.
You can also go on a letter sounds toy hunt!
They gave me the magazine and decided that I should have three minutes to find as many things as I could.
They gave themselves 15 minutes.
When the timer went off, I passed the magazine to my kids, who skipped away, certain they would be victorious.
While they worked on practicing letter sounds, I mopped the kitchen floor!
I love activities that get me involved but also give me the freedom to get something done.
We compared lists when they were done and gave ourselves a point for every word we had that was different from the other team.
It’s kind of like the game Scattegories in that regard.

Other Ways You Can Use This Practice Letter Sounds Scavenger Hunt
- For younger kids who can’t write full words independently, ditch the “teams” element and sit with them and make the list together. You can do all the writing, or have them help when they can!
- Challenge your kids to find as many words for each letter as possible, not just one!
- You don’t even need a paper and pen to play practice letter sounds scavenger hunt if you don’t have that handy. Just work your way through the alphabet, saying the words aloud when you find one. Have each player find something on their own for an extra challenge. Are there three things that start with Q? You never know! Just make sure you share your answers in order of youngest to oldest to keep things fair!
- This activity would be incredibly easy to take on the road, or anywhere you need a sitting still activity. And since it requires basically no prep, you can be ready in seconds.
- There are always magazines in waiting rooms, so this would be a fun and easy way to pass the time there, too.
