U is for Umbrella Letter U Activity

Learning 4 Kids http://ift.tt/1JLIZjC U is for Umbrella - Letter U Book inspired activity from Ella's Umbrellas by Jennifer Lloyd

U is for Umbrella Letter U Activity was inspired by the book Ella’s Umbrellas by Jennifer Lloyd, Illustrated by Ashley Spires. It is a great story to introduce children to the letter U and making their very own umbrellas onto the shape of the letter U.

Making umbrellas on the letter U is a simple and fun activity that provides the opportunity for children to talk about the U, identify what the letter U looks like and what sound it makes.

I have incorporated a free printable for this activity in both cursive and standard print. The dotted letters provides the opportunity for children to practice reading and writing as they trace over the dotted letters.

What you will need?

Activities for the letter U - ella's umbrellas

You will need miniature cupcake cases (patty pans) cut in half, glue stick, black permanent marker, pencil and Ella’s Umbrellas by (author) Jennifer Lloyd, Illustrated by Ashley Spires

You will also need the download and print the letter U.

Let’s Play

U is for Umbrella

To complete the activity children cut the cupcake cases into half and glue them onto the space of the letter U. Using the black marker pen, children then draw on the umbrella handle.

Some Ideas:

  • After reading the book Ella’s Umbrellas, go back through the book and see how many letter ‘U’ you can find.
  • On the printable, ask your child to circle all the letter U they find on the page.
  • Encourage good pencil grip and support your child’s hand if necessary when writing.
  • When the umbrellas on the letter U is completed, you may like to cut it out and glue it onto coloured card. Children can write words beginning with the letter U onto each umbrella (cupcake liner).
  • Talk about other words that begin with the letter U.
  • Watch videos on YouTube that are about the letter U.

How to Keep Your Sanity When Your Kids Stop Napping

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/1AkjeQe

My son stopped napping when he was just shy of turning two years old.  Even though that is when he *officially* ended his afternoon snooze, he had been fighting naps for many months. Some days he would get them, other days he would not.

By the time he gave them up completely we were already dealing with the crabbiness of an over-tired toddler.  That is the really difficult part about kids who stop napping: tiredness=crankiness.

How to Keep Your Sanity When Your Kids Stop Napping

How to Keep Your Sanity When Your Kids Stop Napping

1. Let it go.  My first and foremost piece of advice is to take a deep breath and relax.  Don’t try to “fix” it.  If they are consistently refusing naps and are making it clear to you that they are done, don’t force them.  It’s just going to increase your level of stress and it isn’t going to work anyway.  Trust me.

2.  Sneak in sleep.  What I felt was most important was the total number of hours a day my kiddo was sleeping.  You can look here to see what an appropriate amount of sleep is for your child at their age.  You may realize they are already getting the amount they need.  If not, you may be able to tweak their schedule to allow them a bit more sleep by going to bed earlier or letting them sleep later in the morning.

3.  Quiet time.  Replacing naps with quiet time is another great option.  Sometimes, it’s your only option.  What worked really well for us was having a time in the afternoon where the toys got put away, the shades were drawn and the noise level was brought down.  Kids really need that time to recharge. You can designate a certain place to go that works best for your little one to sit quietly and look at books or color.

Snack Tube Necklaces

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/1QgAbEI snack tube necklaces featured

After a long day of school my little guy is exhausted and hungry and we all know those two just don’t mix well. So while it may be okay to have my son wait until he gets home to snack, I like to keep the peace which is why we have partnered with Horizon to bring you these Snack Tube Necklaces. These are a fun way to present snacks to your hungry little one’s while on-the-go.

What You Need to Make Snack Tube Necklaces:

How to Make Snack Tube Necklaces:

  1. In a bowl mix the ingredients together.
  2. Place mix into tubes until full and attach lid. Tip: If the tube you purchase isn’t very wide, you can break the grahams in half and they will fit in just fine.
  3. Tie a piece of twine around the tube and make into a necklace.
  4. Store in your purse, car, diaper back and even child’s backpack. Give to your child when they need a quick and fun snack.

These snack tubes are perfect for on-the-go. Since they are necklaces they are easy for your little one’s to keep track of. Plus there will be less chance of them spilling these everywhere. These would also be great to take with you while you are visiting the zoo, a theme park, or really anywhere you need a quick and portable snack! The best part is you know your kids will be eating a healthy and nutritious snack!SNACK tube necklaces Facebook

{Kid Hacks} 2 Easy Ways to Put on a Jacket Without Help

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/Yk4wgF jacket hack feature

With cooler weather just around the corner, you’re going to love these kid hacks!  I’ve got two different tricks for teaching your toddler (or preschooler) how to put on his/her own jacket.  They might still need a little help with the zipper, but I found it such huge help when  there was one less thing to deal with when trying to get out the door.  My son, who demonstrates both techniques in the photos, is a preschooler now but he’s been putting on his own jacket since toddlerhood.  Imagine not having to stand at the door, keys, purse, backpack, etc. in hand and hold out a pint-sized jacket in an effort to get it on a wiggly little kid.   With these two easy techniques that wiggly little one can do it without help!  They gain independence, you get a little extra sanity, it’s a win-win!

Kid Hacks

How to Put on a Jacket – The Flip Method

kid hacks

  1. Place the coat on the floor with the inside facing up.
  2. Stand facing the coat with your feet at the top. (Where the collar or hood are.)
  3. Bend down and slip your arms into the sleeves.
  4. Flip the coat over your head as you stand up.
  5. Voila!  All warm and ready to go!

How to Put on a Jacket – The Hood First Method

kid hacks

* Obviously if your jacket doesn’t have a hood you’d want to use the first method, but this is another great way for your kid to get dressed on their own.

  1. Make sure your coat is unzipped and place the hood on your head.
  2. Reach back until you feel the arm hole and slip your arm in.
  3. To find the other sleeve more easily, use the sleeved hand to pull the opposite side of the jacket towards the front, then slip your arm into the sleeve.
  4. That’s it!  All in and ready to go!

Fastening the zipper, snaps, or buttons takes practice but at least the jacket is on!  Now if there was just any easy way to keep track of both shoes…you might leave the house in record speed!

To help those fastening skills, try this awesome DIY Clipping Toy!
