U is for Umbrella Letter U Activity was inspired by the book Ella’s Umbrellas by Jennifer Lloyd, Illustrated by Ashley Spires. It is a great story to introduce children to the letter U and making their very own umbrellas onto the shape of the letter U.
Making umbrellas on the letter U is a simple and fun activity that provides the opportunity for children to talk about the U, identify what the letter U looks like and what sound it makes.
I have incorporated a free printable for this activity in both cursive and standard print. The dotted letters provides the opportunity for children to practice reading and writing as they trace over the dotted letters.

Let’s Play
To complete the activity children cut the cupcake cases into half and glue them onto the space of the letter U. Using the black marker pen, children then draw on the umbrella handle.
Some Ideas:
- After reading the book Ella’s Umbrellas, go back through the book and see how many letter ‘U’ you can find.
- On the printable, ask your child to circle all the letter U they find on the page.
- Encourage good pencil grip and support your child’s hand if necessary when writing.
- When the umbrellas on the letter U is completed, you may like to cut it out and glue it onto coloured card. Children can write words beginning with the letter U onto each umbrella (cupcake liner).
- Talk about other words that begin with the letter U.
- Watch videos on YouTube that are about the letter U.
