Super Sight Word Pencils

hands on : as we grow http://ift.tt/1iswtMB

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No … it’s a super-sight-word-pencil-to-help-little-ones-gain-confidence-with-their-writing-um, thing!

These cute sight word pencils are part of a wonderful game to help children practice sight words. Perfect for reluctant writers.

For some kids writing comes quick and easy. For others, they need a little time and encouragement. For children who are a bit slower to write, when the writing skills do begin to emerge, there is often a very important piece missing. Confidence.

Adding in little tools can make a huge difference. While this super-pencil likely seems quite trivial, it holds an incredible power (a super power, if you will – and yes, I will be doing that all post long.) This super pencil helps little ones get confident with their writing.

To make this Super Sight Word Pencil I hot glued googly eyes and a cape onto a pencil. I used some folded tissue paper as the cape, but construction paper or fabric would work quite well.

(A note from Jamie: After Sarah shared these with me as I am prepping this post to share with you, I made my own super pencil by simply taping a sticky note – the sticky part wasn’t quite enough – to a pencil and decorated it with stickers! It’s quite cute!)

I opted to use a really thick pencil – this one is actually tree bark-like (you can buy them here with my affiliate link).

I like using thick pencils with young writers, and this one has a nice grip to it making it ideal for little hands. You could very easily make a super pencil out of a normal pencil though.

Now what to do with this super sight word pencil? As the name suggests, we use it for … sight words. BAM! ZAP! KAZOOEY! (I know it doesn’t really fit, but I really wanted to add it in somewhere).

A very powerful tool for young writers is to help them find sight words around the house and classroom. Words are everywhere. Chances are, in a classroom, there is a word wall with lots of words displayed. And in a home, there are oodles of books filled with words.

When a little one is writing and gets stuck on a word this Super Sight Word Pencil will zoom to the rescue! With that speedy cape and those big watchful eyes almost any word can be spotted.

Once the super pencil has flown through books or over to a word wall, she can write down that word too – why yes, this super pencil can do it all.

And if your little writer is working on breaking apart words into their phonemes (or sounds) then you should introduce Super Sight Word Pencil’s trusty sidekick Super Sound it Out Pencil (or a catchier name, I’m just stumped).

This trusty side kick, wearing a different coloured cape, can help little ones break words down to their sounds. With that trusty super pencil in their little hands, children will remember to stretch the word and listen to each sound. A simple tool with an awesome power (yep, a super power)

These little super pencils are great for kids of all ages. My Sam is working on letter sounds. The other day his super pencil was flying all around looking for things that started with various sounds. He was looking for words that started with the sound “F’ and “Flew” his super pencil to the “Flowers”.

Then he drew the letter “F” in his book, with a little picture of flowers.

Any little tool that takes the intimidation out of writing is worth it. If children can get wrapped up in a game of super heroes while finding and writing sight words or stretching and writing words phonetically, well that is pretty awesome.

Never fear, teachers and Mamas worldwide, the super pencils are here to save the day. Or at least a writing assignment or two.
