Q is for Quilt Letter Q Activity is an activity that was inspired by the book The Quilt by Ann Jonas. It is a great story to introduce children to the letter Q and extend the learning by making a quilted letter Q.
Making the quilted letter Q is simple and a fun activity that provides the opportunity to expose children to the Q, identify what the letter Q looks like and what sound it makes.
I have incorporated a free printable for this activity in both cursive and standard print. The dotted letters provides the opportunity for children to practise reading and writing as they trace over the dotted letters.
What you will need?
You will need fabric squares, PVA craft glue, glue brush or pop stick and Q is for Quilt printable.

Let’s Play
To complete the activity children use the glue brush to paint on the PVA craft glue into the space of the letter Q. It is best to place the glue onto the paper and not apply the glue to fabric squares. Children then fill the letter Q space with coloured fabric squares. Add extra glue to paper as needed to ensure all the fabric squares are glued down.
Some Ideas:
- After reading the book Little Cloud by Eric Carle, go back through the book and see how many letter ‘c’ you can find.
- On the printable, ask your child to circle all the letter Q or q that they can find.
- When the letter quilted Q is completed and dry, you may like to cut it out and glue it onto paper that has been painted in quilt-like patterns.
- Talk about other words that begin with the letter Q, such as quiet and question.
- Watch videos on YouTube that are about the letter Q.
- Look into a mirror and watch how your lips are moving to make the Q sound.
Let’s Learn
The dotted letters provides the opportunity for children to practise reading and writing as they trace over the dotted letters. Encourage good pencil grip and support your child’s hand if necessary when writing.

Q is for Q-Tip – Letter Q Activity
Another alternative to the quilting a letter Q is painting one with Q-Tips. Here is Australia we call Q-Tips, Cotton Wool Buds but in the bigger world Q-Tips would be a perfect addition to this activity. Q is for Q-Tips! Dip the ends of the he Q-Tips into paint and dot away on the letter Q shape.
