I am sure we all know a family that focuses on giving the greatest gifts no matter the cost. Don’t be one of those families because after all, that isn’t the true meaning of the holidays. While I’d like to think we all know the real meaning, sometimes we lose sight of that especially with all the craziness of the season. And when we lose sight, so do our children. Volunteer with them – Volunteering as a family is good for everyone involved. You are not only spending time together but you are also learning the value of giving selflessly to another. Volunteering during the holidays is extra special. It reminds us that we are to give without ever needing to receive. It’s an amazing feeling!
Talk about those less fortunate – What your kids don’t know won’t help them (yes, I know that isn’t how the saying goes but for this purpose, it is). The thing is, we can try to shelter our kids from the world around us but that only hurts them. Discuss how other’s may not have what they do and how you can help make their lives better especially during the holidays. Ever since I’ve had that talk with my oldest son, he has had a new perspective on life and how things work. Less greed and more giving can come from it all if you just take the time to talk.
Actively Give – Once your children know about the less fortunate, it’s time to teach them the power behind giving. Giving can be as simple as volunteering (as mentioned above) but they can also give clothing and food which are the basic necessities for life. Even giving toys to children who could use a little more joy this time of year is a fantastic idea. It doesn’t matter how you give or what you give as long as you are doing it.
Establish Family Traditions – Family traditions are so important. Children remember more than we like to think they do. Having them remember traditions surrounded by family during the holidays will make a lifelong impression. Bake cookies together, wrap presents, go caroling, play games, or do whatever you feel is the best way to spend time and celebrate the holidays. No matter what you choose, make sure it’s done together as a family.
Forget the Spending – As I mentioned earlier, sometimes we get so fixated on purchasing physical gifts no matter the cost or financial burden it places on our families. Can you imagine a world where we all choose to save every year to give to other’s and spend more time with family than we spend of money? It would make the world a better place. This year you can opt to forget about all the holiday spending unless it’s time because time is priceless and that is a beautiful thing to teach to our children.
