Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/2nJvAoT 19 Clever Mugs For Mom

Like many mamas, I start each and every day with a cup of coffee. Of course, it’s so much more fun with a great mug! I have my favorite one which actually says ‘World’s Best Dad’ that I stole from my husband so I’m thinking I should probably upgrade to one of these awesome mugs for mom.

These are so cute and clever and would actually be a super great gift for a birthday, Mother’s Day, Christmas, you name it. Which one is your favorite?

Isn’t My Child Too Old to STILL Be Wetting the Bed?

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/2oi7W3U

Potty training.

It was a challenge in our house. I have three boys and I’ll admit that it didn’t come naturally to any of us…including me.

And then it was over!

{insert angel choir singing here}

GOODNITES child too old to wet bed

All that hard work had paid off. Potty training was officially over. Life fell into a new normal without diapers, wipes & frantic searches for changing tables.

For a few months.

And then one night there was a wet bed.

No problem! Accidents happen. We changed the bed in the middle of the night.

It happened again the next night.

And the night after that.

It went on longer than I had originally expected – long enough for both me and my son to notice that things were a bit different.

The “novelty” of middle of the night laundry wore off quickly. I tried not to make a big deal about it. I knew that it wasn’t his fault. He wasn’t doing this intentionally. In fact, he was embarrassed by it. I was also concerned that it was interrupting his sleep pattern (and mine).

GOODNITES PJ basket bedwetting

And then the mom guilt set in. Obviously, I had FAILED at potty training because my kid was wetting the bed.  <–don’t you love how we can make anything into something to worry about?

That set me on a path of research. I found that it isn’t uncommon for kids to wet the bed (especially if one or both of the parents were bedwetters).  In fact, 1 in 6 kids between the ages of 4 and 12 experience bedwetting. It was important to me that he didn’t feel like he was delayed – this is normal and nothing to worry about for many children. It is also common for stress to increase or trigger bedwetting.

I looked back at the time period that this started and realized that our house had been a little crazy at the time. His bedwetting may have been triggered by his inability to cope with the changes, or it could be just a natural part of his development.

GoodNites Kids Activities Blog

I decided the solution for our family was GoodNites Bedtime Pants. They worked great for us. They are incredibly discreet – his brothers didn’t even know he had them on. We had no more middle-of-the-night wake ups or laundry loads.

GoodNites let us concentrate on the important things like an evening card game, bedtime stories, making a fort out of stuffed animals, an extremely leisurely bath, and a crazy-early wake up time by choice.  <–#ThatsMyKid

GOODNITES bedwetting PJ stack

We continued to use GoodNites. Some nights were dry. Some nights were not. But using GoodNites helped me rest easy, and helped my boys feel comfortable and confident at night.

At our next physician visit, I chatted with our doctor about the situation. I wanted to make sure that my research was right. He assured us that it was completely normal and that it would resolve on its own with time and growth. He told me to worry about something else for the next few YEARS!

So it became a non-issue in our house.

I don’t remember exactly how long it continued, but it was years not months that resolved this problem.

There is no shame in bedwetting. No shame for the child. No shame for the parent! It is simply a developmental stage just like a million other milestones a child reaches during childhood.  Instead of worrying, spend this stage embracing what makes our kids different, unique and special.  The things that make parents say – that’s MY kid!  Every child has a different story, experience, timeline, behavior, trait, and that’s how it should be!

Why It’s Okay Not to Read at Bedtime

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/2ohzNkw Hidden Ways You Are Ruining Your Child's Love Of Reading

I love to read with our kids (especially after seeing how daily reading impacts them!) but sometimes, I just… don’t.   Today I want to tell you my story about why it’s okay not to read at bedtime.

Are You Ruining Your Child's Love of Reading

Hidden Ways You Are Ruining Your Childs Love of Reading

Yes, I have a confession. It’s one of those confessions that you fear will make other parents give you that side-eye glance and question your Mommyhood Card.  Are you ready for it?  I’m not a fan of reading at bedtime.  There, I said it.

I know, I know, but how will my children be exposed to books? Don’t I know how important early literacy is to their developing brains and vocabulary?  Aren’t I depriving them of their fundamental right to a bedtime story?!

Of course, I know all of that and there’s no way I would deprive my children of books.  I just don’t read to them at the end of the day, because I’m not at my best. To be honest, I’m tired and sometimes a little cranky by the time bedtime rolls around.  I don’t want my children to end the day on a sour note because I’ve run out of patience.  If you’re not a fan of reading at bedtime, don’t worry!

Here are some ways you can fit reading into the day when you’re in a better frame of mind.

Breakfast and a Book

Since I get up earlier than everyone else, by the time the kids get up I have had my coffee and am ready to face the day.  We like to ease into our daily routine, so as they’re sitting at the kitchen table eating breakfast, I break out the book we’re reading aloud. The kids are less tired and are more engaged.  When they’re done eating, we’re usually deep into a conversation about the characters or storyline.  It’s a great, gentle way to start the day.

One-on-One Reading Time

It’s hard to sit and wait for a sibling to get done with dance class or gymnastics, so I use that time to read with the non-participating child.  If it’s too noisy inside or we’d be distracting others, we’ll take our book outside and sit in the car or on the lawn while we wait.  They get to pick the book we read, so there’s instant engagement and usually a lot of giggles.  It’s become a time we cherish instead of an hour we dread.

Audio Books by Mom

I’m not exactly sure how the tradition started, but one my children’s favorite book-related activities is to listen to books on our mobile tablet that I have read aloud.  I use the audio recorder on the device to read short picture books that they can follow along in while the recording plays.  We have quite a collection of book recordings now and they constantly replay their favorites.  I usually record a new one each weekend, so that they have something to look forward to on Monday morning.

Let Dad Read

Just because I’m not at my best in the evenings doesn’t mean that my husband isn’t.  It’s not unusual for him to read to the kids at bedtime before we tuck them in.  As moms, we often think we have to do it all, but when we share the responsibilities and pleasures of parenting, we’re better for it.

Parenting is hard and if you’re struggling with being patient enough at bedtime to read a story, don’t feel bad.  As long as your children are being exposed to books at other times, they’re going to be just fine.  A successful childhood is not contingent upon bedtime stories.  Find more parenting advice like this on our Facebook page!

Guilt Cheese

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/2nzH5xo

Guilt Cheese is the perfect cheesy, gooey, “treat yo’ self” reward lunch.  Oh, and it has bacon.  Enough said.  It’s an easy-to-make and a pull-apart-and-watch-the-cheese-stretch kid-favorite.

Decadent grilled cheese and bacon sandwiches with oozing cheese running out.  You want it.

Ingredients for Guilt Cheese

  • 4 slices of jalapeno cheddar bread (or any high quality white bread from bakery section of the grocery store)
  • 4 slices of bacon, chopped into 1 to 1 1/2 inch pieces
  • 8 slices of cheese (I got a variety pack and mixed and match.  Get creative!)
  • 2 tsp butter (I use unsalted)
  • Mayonnaise for spreading

Directions for Guilt Cheese

  1. Cook bacon (sliced into pieces) on medium-high heat until crisp.  Remove from pan and drain grease into container (to be thrown away in garbage once solid)
  2. Place pan back on stove on medium heat.  Once pan is warm, place butter and a sprinkle of salt into pan.
  3. Spread mayonnaise on one side of two slices of bread and place the spread side facing down in the pan.  Place cheese on top of uncooked bread.  Split bacon pieces between the two sandwiches and place on top of cheese.  Add more cheese on top of the bacon. Cover with another slice of bread.
  4. Cook sandwich for three minutes (or until golden brown).
  5. Remove sandwich from pan and spread mayo on uncooked slice of bread.
  6. Place uncooked side face down in pan.  Cook until golden brown.

Note

-I use a cast iron pan for this recipe.  I find it has the best results.

Time:

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes
Yield: 2 servings

Slash Your Grocery Bill in Half

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/2nPrCLK

If you could spend half as much on your grocery bill wouldn’t you do that every time you went shopping? As a Mom that stays home with my kids, I’m always looking for ways to be frugal and Save Money. We have some great tips to share with you that you’ve probably never even thought of!

Slash Your Grocery Bill in Half

Awesome Tips to Slash Your Grocery Bill

Stockpile!

I’m not talking crazy couponer style stockpiling (unless that’s your thing) – but it only makes sense to pick up things while they’re on sale.  The key is to ONLY do this if you need and use an item. Do not buy 60 bags of frozen corn because it’s $.10 a bag because you think you’ll make Corn Chowder but you really hate corn. That corn will likely never get eaten and you’ll end up WASTING money.

If your family loves a certain cereal and it’s on super sale, grab a few extra boxes for your stockpile. Another tip with stockpiling, keep it someplace out of your kitchen.  If I have my stockpile of extra cereal in the kitchen, my kids would just eat it until it’s gone.  Having it out of site, they don’t go through it as fast!

Stores typically rotate sales every few weeks so buy enough of what you need for that particular item until it goes on sale again.  Maybe canned tomatoes are something that you use regularly in recipes, buy enough while they are on sale to get you to the NEXT sale. You’ll get better at this as you practice!

Shop the Sales

Like I said, you don’t have to be an extreme couponer to save money on groceries.  Shopping the in-store sales is a great way to cut down your grocery bill total.  If you do want to dabble in couponing, this is a great place to start and you can double up your in store coupons with a manufacturer coupon for even more savings.  You better believe when my favorite General Mills cereal is on sale at my local grocery store, I head over to coupons.com to see if there are any coupons available and double up the savings!

Slash Your Grocery Bill in Half

Vegetarian Meal

Meat is so expensive, I cannot believe how much it costs for a pound of ground beef these days. We try to have at least one meatless meal every week if not more to cut back on that expense.  My family doesn’t really notice and it saves so much!

In recipes that call for beef, cut back on the amount you use and add in beans.  This is not only cheaper but tastes delicious too! A couple of our favorites are Cheesy Potato Soup and Caprese Omelets.

Make it Yourself

You’d be surprised what all you can make yourself!  Try making your bread from scratch to save money.  We have a great simple French Bread Recipe that anyone can make and it’s so good!  You can even make your own Fruit Snacks for kids AND Fruit Roll Ups!

Meal Plan – but do it the RIGHT way

Most people sit down to meal plan and decide what sounds good for the week. Maybe someone in the family wants roast and another person wants taco’s, so you put those on your menu and create your grocery list. Right?

A great tip for saving money is creating your menu around what’s on sale at the store that week and also using up what you having in your cabinet. Is chicken on sale this week – what recipes can you make with it? And, if it’s a really great deal – buy extra and freeze them for another week.

Making this simple change when you’re meal planning can save you tons of money!

Physical Activities for Toddlers with Lots of Energy

Hands On As We Grow http://ift.tt/1znrEsK

Physical activities for toddlers are amazing for those that have lots of energy. And let’s face it. What toddler doesn’t? I know mine all did at that age, and I’m chasing Louis all over the place at the moment! It gets insane at times!

Who has said any of the following?

My toddler has too much energy.

My toddler won’t sit still.

My toddler won’t draw or color.

I’ve probably said all of that before with my three, very energetic, boys.

Or… the one I probably say the most: If only I could bottle up some of that energy for myself!

I do like to embrace that energy with physical activities for toddlers. It’s my way of harnessing their energy and refocusing it into good physical play when it gets out of hand.

Toddlers just learned to walk and run. They want and need to practice! Why should I stop that? I want to help them practice in every way possible!

Lots of energy burning activities -- physical activities for toddlers

I’m curious, as a parent, I wonder if I’d know what gross motor activities are. I know what they are now because I’ve been in this world of educators while I’ve been blogging about our activities. But before that, I wonder if I’d know. Do you know what I mean when I say gross motor?

Gross motor activities are physical activities for kids to move in a big way. They use their big muscles. When they run, jump, twirl, skip, hop, climb, that’s all gross motor. They’re very physical activities.

So that’s what this list is — a list of physical activities for toddlers to move in big ways: jumping, walking, spinning, climbing, and all of that!

Since toddlers have just learning to move in general, these are the beginning stages for them (a jumping game that requires a toddler to actually get off the ground is probably off limits as most toddlers will probably only make it to their tippy toes)!

Get the Gross Motor Go-To List here

Here are 20 of those physical activities for toddlers to let their energy loose!

As you can see, these physical activities are simple for toddlers to do! They’re not all that difficult to set up and get toddlers moving when they have lots of energy to burn.

While these are not just physical activities for toddlers, these 50 toddler activities are great to keep them busy too!

Happy Sunshine Clothespin Craft

Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/2o7wM6t Happy Sunshine Clothespin Craft

Spring is on the way! Welcome warm air, blue skies, and sunshine with this Happy Sunshine Clothespin Craft. This simple craft is perfect for little ones working on fine-motor skills. It’s great for home, school, or daycare.

Happy Sunshine Clothespin Craft

Happy Sunshine Clothespin Craft

We used a circle paper punch to make the base for our sun, but you could also invite kids to trace a mug or old CD. This craft makes an especially cute refrigerator magnet if you place a strip of magnetic tape to the back. My kids like playing with it and moving all the clothespins to the top of the circle to make the sun look like it has hair!

Materials Needed

  • miniature clothespins
  • yellow cardstock
  • eye stickers or wiggly eyes
  • black colored pencils
  • yellow Dot Art marker
  • circular object to trace or 2 3/4″ circle paper punch

Happy Sunshine Clothespin Craft

This part is so fun! Kids will get a kick out of dying wooden clothespin with a yellow Dot Art marker. Simply place the clothespins on a paper towel and invite kids to press the dot marker onto them. The paper towel will catch the ink that doesn’t absorb into the wood.

Happy Sunshine Clothespin Craft

As the clothespins are drying, invite kids to create their circle with the paper punch or by tracing a round object.

Happy Sunshine Clothespin Craft

Press eye stickers or wiggly eyes onto the paper, then invite kids to draw a mouth on their sunshine with a black pen and crayons or a colored pencil.

Happy Sunshine Clothespin Craft

Show kids how to squeeze the clothespins onto the yellow circle to make it a sunshine!
