Kids Activities Blog http://ift.tt/1DqLGRc

The city of Melbourne has a vibrant atmosphere and attractions galore to keep the littlest of adventurers with something new to explore and discover daily. From the bustling cosmopolitan city to the stunning coast lines and allure of the mountains and Yarra Valley, you will find family fun to suit everyone’s tastes in Melbourne and it’s surrounds. It was incredibly hard to narrow down a list of just 10 family friendly activities, but here are the 10 that if I was visiting Melbourne, I would just have to do!

10 Things to Do with Kids in Melbourne, Australia

1. Melbourne Zoo – If you love animals then the award-winning Melbourne Zoo, with over 250 species of animals is a must stop for your family. Walk the trail of the Elephants and be sure to visit our favourite spot, the Orang-utan sanctuary.

2. Phillip Island – I could write about 3 or 4 separate entries just for things to do on Phillip Island as it’s one of my favourite places to go with children. Enjoy the uniqueness of this gorgeous little island that is brimming with wildlife and attractions. Be sure to visit Seal Rocks, the Penguin Parade, the Phillip Island Wildlife Park, the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory and the Churchill Island Heritage Farm as these are all must-see places! You might want to spend at least a few days exploring Phillip Island!

3. Science Works – This family friendly museum has been designed to engage, delight and amaze the senses with spectacular hands-on exhibitions suitable for all ages. It is a fabulous day out where the kids (and adults) will learn a lot without being aware that they’re actually learning! Be sure to also visit the Melbourne Planetarium while you’re there as it’s one not to be missed!

4. Sovereign Hill – Just 90 minutes drive from Melbourne, you and the family can step back into the 1850’s and join the gold rush movement! This unique family friendly attraction offers activities from gold panning to exploring the underground mines and no trip is complete without a trip to the confectionery shop!

5. Puffing Billy – If you’re not on a tight budget then you must take a trip out to Melbourne’s scenic Dandenong Ranges and hop aboard our century old steam train that still puffs it’s way around it’s original mountain track. For the most fun, be sure to go on a fine day so that the kids can sit in the windows with their legs hanging out the side. One of the stops, Emerald Lake Park is a lovely destination all on it’s own.

6. Werribee Open Range Zoo – Jump on the Safari bus and travel across the African savannah landscape, encountering majestic beasts along the way. Here, all the animal exhibits resemble their natural habitats as closely as possible, so they can live and interact as they would in the wild. A truly special day out.

7. Melbourne Museum – Despite visiting the Melbourne Museum fairly regularly with our kids, it is always still a fabulous day out. The exhibitions are interactive and interesting with many popular exhibits, like the Dinosaurs Walk, there all year round. There are always special kids themed exhibitions over School Holidays and they will just love visiting the Children’s Gallery! An inexpensive and very entertaining day out.

8. Hedgend Maze – Hedgend Maze in Healesville is a fabulous family day out. Get lost in the giant hedge maze, play unlimited mini golf and enjoy the beautiful children’s play area in a gorgeous, scenic part of Melbourne. Healesville also boasts popular wineries as well as the Internationally renowned Healesville Sanctuary full of Australian animals.

9. Collingwood Children’s Farm – The Collingwood Children’s farm is a non-profit inner city farm where children can wander and interact on a real working farm. It provides for a laid back day of getting close to farm animals and nature for a reasonably small cost.

10. Art Play – ArtPlay is a creative arts studio for children aged two to 12 and their families. You can find it behind Federation Square, next to the Yarra River in the heart of the city. In this unique space, children can become involved in artistic and creative projects with their families and have the chance to work alongside professional artists. There is also a super fun playground for the kids to burn off some energy as well.

Besides all of these fabulous attractions, Melbourne is home to many more incredible parks and venues that you will find scattered throughout the leafy suburbs. For even more ideas of things to do with the kids in Melbourne, check out the Visit Melbourne website.
