Frequently Asked Questions About Common Core

What does Common Core really mean?

Common Core State Standards are a new way of measuring what skills and knowledge our children are learning in school.  To ensure all students are prepared for college and career success after graduation, the Common Core State Standards set clear, consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in math and English language arts.  They go beyond the bubble test, by setting higher standards and encouraging children to explain their thinking. The idea is that they learn to employ creative problem solving and use critical thinking to do much more than memorize facts.

Why is the Common Core a good thing?

The goal of the Common Core is to help children be better equipped for the rapidly changing world and measure their progress along the way to ensure that goal is achieved.  Change is hard and this new set of standards is designed to be challenging, but with time and practice your child will learn a valuable set of skills.
