A couple of months ago we got a Bosu (affiliate) – An indoor exercise tool.  The best investment for gray drippy days where we still need to move, but space is limited and the kids don’t want to go outside.  We have included it as a must-have item for a seonsory home.

A BOSU is like one of those big yoga balls, only it is cut in half and on a platform.  You can use the top of it as if it were a ball, but you can also flip the BOSU over and use it as a “wobble-board” for balance, or being goofy.

Bosu Exercises

1) Sit on the top of it and do arm rolls or even read a book.  Just the act of sitting on the ball will help your kids develop their sense of balance.  If you have a wiggly kid, doing their reading on top of the Bosu can actually help them pay attention longer to the text as they are getting their wiggles out just by sitting.

2) Turn the Bosu upside down so the ball part is on the floor.  Turn on some Beetles Surfing Music and go surfing on your platform.  This activity will help your kids develop vestibular awareness – or help them recognize when they are falling and how to correct themselves.  Great pre-bike riding skills!

3) Push-ups.  Everything is more fun on a squishy surface!!

4)  Do planks.  We like to do planks sideways.  If your kids have a hard time being straight, they can rest their knees on the floor.

5) Playing on the phone… resting their elbows on the bosue while they play their game device helps them work out their core, and as they move and jerk with the game, they are getting a mini-work out.  It’s better than playing games on the couch.  Make this the “game-zone”.

6) Get Jumping.  Who needs an indoor trampoline when the kids can jump and bounce on a ball.  It is harder to land on than it looks.

7) Work on balancing.  You can balance on one leg.  Balance with one leg held high behind you… even try to do handstands or somersaults.  Try some of these alphabet exercises for preschoolers – with your BOSU.

8) Stretch out your back.  Lay across the ball portion with your arms over your head, the ball will support your back while allowing it to stretch and extend the vertebrates.  It will feel so good.

9) Dance… but turn the bosu over first.  Dance on the platform portion.  Get your camera out and do selfy videos of each other while you dance.  It’s hilarious!
