Here is a simple craft from Adrienne to do if you ever paint with your cars. It’s easy and fun, but turns out so beautiful!
My son could play with small cars and trucks all day long. He “vrooms” them all over the house, takes baths with them, plays in the dirt with them, and he even sleeps with them! We’ve also tried painting with our vehicles and had so much fun!
In this activity, we upped the fun level and added some extra layers of paper to transfer the prints using only the car tires. It was process art for toddlers at it’s best! See what I mean…
To get started, you will need:
- Toy cars and trucks
- Washable paint
- Paper
- Card stock
- Tray or drop cloth (if doing inside)
- Water and soap (for clean up)
Let Them Play!
The great thing about this activity is that it is all about letting the kids just play in their paint. I put a couple globs of different colors of paint on a piece of paper while my son collects his vehicles. Then I let him go to town making tracks all over the paper with his cars and playing with them as he pleases.
(Really, this was just a fun way to spread out the paint for our next step!)
Don’t leave out the younger siblings!
While my son is happily playing, I let my daughter get involved by putting globs of yogurt or baby food on her high chair and giving her a few cars to drive around as well. She has a great time making (and tasting) her tracks. I make sure to supervise her with the cars.
If you have a child who is working on learning their colors, try rainbow car painting!
Make Prints
When there are a good amount of tracks, take a piece of card stock and lay it on top of the paper with the paint tracks. I have my son drive a few cars on top to press it down gently.
Then we lift it up and we have a beautiful print of car tracks!
I give my son a new piece of paper and new paint to continue making tracks as long as he wants to. We usually make several prints before he gets tired of it!
Clean Up
I always try and involve my son in the cleanup when we do projects. For this project, I’m not sure which is more fun-the painting or the cleanup!
After your cars are covered in paint, they need a serious car wash! I fill the sink with water and dish soap and let my son play with his cars in there until they are clean. Then we lay them out to dry off.
Use Your Prints
Once your prints have dried, you can use them for different things, Here are some ideas:
- Make a card for a loved one using the print. We used ours to make Father’s Day cards! (yup, it’s taken me that long to share this!)
- Cut into shapes and laminate to make bookmarks.
- Glue a photo to the print, so it frames the photo.
- Glue googly eyes and other craft supplies to make monsters or silly animals or whatever else you can come up with.
- Just hang it on the fridge as it is. You could even attach a magnet to the back.
