Work on scissor skills and build fine motor skills with super silly paper bag haircuts from our Member of the Month, Stephanie!
For hands-on moms, the internet is a vast resource of parenting ideas and kid-friendly activities. Pinterest alone has thousands of cute DIY crafts and fun activities just waiting to be pinned.
Our Member of the Month, Stephanie, loved having all these resources at her fingertips! But there was a small hitch.
“I mean, I can Pinterest activities and do them with my kids right?” Stephanie shares. “I can. But I don’t actually do them.”
All that aspirational pinning, without actually doing the activities, brought Stephanie to The Activity Room®.
“I wrestled with if I should join or not,” Stephanie says. “It’s 100% worth it to save my time and have everything laid out for me.”

“Not only do you have the calendar but the Facebook group is filled with ideas and different ways other people did the same activities,” Stephanie explains.

What’s your favorite thing to do with your kids when you get a few moments?
My kids are all very physically active.
So when we’re bored or they’re getting restless I have my Echo Dot play the hokey pokey or the bird dance. We have a mini dance party.
What’s your best tip for doing activities with your kids?
Be adaptable. Don’t look at the list of items needed and assume you can’t do it because you’re missing a piece.
Adapt the activity for what you do have.

Paper Bag Haircuts
Instead of my kids playing salon or barbershop with their dolls, or each other, we created a safe alternative. My kids love to give a paper bag haircuts!
For this activity, we needed:
- lunch size paper bag(s)
- sharpie
- kid-safe scissors
First, draw a face on one side of the paper bag. You could totally involve your kids with this part of the setup.
Draw on the basics, then invite your child to add in the details. If they get stuck, give them a little nudge to add in hair, color in the eyes, or make a smile.
Around the top of the bag, cut vertical strips that go about halfway down. This will be the bag’s “hair.”
Then, let your mini hair stylists get to work!
Invite your child to give paper bag haircuts. They can cut each strip individually or trim several strands at once.
This is great scissor work for older toddlers and preschoolers. For younger kids without scissor skills, they can simply tear off the paper bag’s “hair.”
We loved drawing silly faces on our bags before giving them crazy hairstyles!
