The best kids’ activities are usually the most simple.

The same holds true with this super easy painted tree branch craft for kids.

We recently had a pretty bad rainstorm, which caused sticks and branches to litter our backyard.

So the kids saved a few of their favorite branches for a craft. And we created these simple eco-friendly painted sticks for pretend play!

We love using sustainable materials and getting inspiration from nature whenever we can.

Any time we can create an eco-friendly craft or limit our waste is a big win for us!

Whether you want to teach your kids how to recycle, or you’re just looking for a simple art idea, your family will love this creative art project!

Painted Tree Branch Craft for Kids

To create your own kids tree branch craft, you’ll need:

  • tree branches, sticks or twigs
  • knife (for adult use only)
  • sandpaper
  • craft paint or puffy paint

Prepare Your Branches

First, my kids chose their perfect stick.

We had a bunch to choose from because of the recent rainstorm!

Depending on what their vision is, they can choose a stick that has a certain bend or twist to it, or one that is straight and long.

My son chose a stick to transform into a knight’s sword. My daughter chose her stick to create a princess wand!

This is a great time to discuss what fairy tale they want to pretend play later!

The next step is one for the adult to complete. With a knife, carefully scrape away all the bark, and chisel away any parts of the stick that your child would like removed.

Next, let your child take a piece of sandpaper and start sanding the stick smooth by hand.

This is a safe way for them to help with the prep work!

Wipe clean with a cloth, and you’re ready to start painting!

Paint & Decorate Your Kids Tree Branch Craft

Create a simple painted tree branch craft for kids and inspire fairy tale pretend play.

Encourage your child to get creative!

What could a simple stick be transformed into? A wand? A rocket? An animal?

We used two different types of paint for our eco-friendly art project.

First, the kids painted a base coat all over their sticks using simple craft paint.

It dried pretty quickly since the wood soaked up a lot of the moisture.

Next, they added details with puffy paint. My daughter added jewels all over her princess wand.

Let your kids decorate their tree branch craft any way they want to.

My son painted his sword silver with a brown handle, then added red “rubies” to the hilt with puffy paint.

Paint and decorate the tree branch craft to go along with the fairy tale pretend play your kids choose.

Tip: We did our painting on the back porch over a glass-topped table. Anytime you can get outside, it makes cleanup so much easier! The paint wiped right off the glass as soon as we were finished.

This project was so fun because we really had no expectations.

It’s all about the process and just having fun being creative.

They were so excited about the finished art projects.

These painted sticks inspired them to play fairy tale land all afternoon.
