This simple Valentine's Day activity uses supplies you probably already have at home!

DIY Your No-Prep Valentine’s Day Heart Craft

There are only four steps to preparing the craft. I got goosebumps writing that: just four steps.

Flip your paper plate so that it is bottom up. Grab your red or pink marker and cover the plate with color.

We love everything red for Valentine's Day

Once colored, take the black marker and draw a large heart on top of the colored plate. Draw a nice big hear, covering most of the plate if possible.

Cut out the heart from the plate. If your child is using scissors, this would be a great opportunity to strengthen those skills.

Cut out the heart for some extra fine motor skills

Once the heart is cut out, it’s time for you (the adult) to step in.

Use your very sharp pencil to poke holes all around the heart. Press the pencil firmly through the plate.

Make as many holes as you have pieces of ribbon. I made 12 holes total.

Space the holes out around the heart. Too many holes, too close together could cause it to weaken and rip.

Get ready for ribbon threading during your fine motor craft for kids

Start with small holes, but you can slide the pencil through each hole and twist to make them bigger if needed. My five-year-old needed the holes to be a little bigger.

Cut your ribbon, curling or gift-wrap ribbon works best, into as many strips as you have holes in the heart.

I chose to use already curled ribbon from an old gift bag, but it doesn’t need to be curled. If you want to curl the ribbon you have, carefully slide it over the sharp edge of your scissors.

Tie a double knot about an inch from the top of each piece of ribbon. If your child can tie knots or would like to try, this would be great practice.

Challenge your child to thread the ribbon through each of the holes in the plate. The knot will catch and stop the ribbon from slipping all the way through.

The ribbon will dangle out of the bottom of the heart to make a fun and funky looking Valentine’s Day decoration.
