Learning colors seems to be one of the first things that toddlers and preschoolers grasp.
I don’t know the technical, or developmental approach to learning colors, but I do know a lot of fun ways to foster learning colors for toddlers and preschoolers! We have done so many color activities!
Color Activities for Preschoolers (& lots of ’em)!
From color activities that help preschoolers recognize the differences in colors, labeling them and so forth, toactivities that focus on sorting by color and then getting into the fun of what happens when colors are mixed!
Whatever the stage your preschooler (or toddler) is at…
Color Recognition Activities for Preschoolers
Recognizing anything is the first step to learning. By recognizing colors, preschoolers are learning to see that there are differences in colors. While this may be basic for some preschoolers, many toddlers know their colors, these color activities are more advanced that preschoolers will have a blast with them!
- Go on a toy color scavenger hunt to make a rainbow! (shown above)
- No toys to hunt for? (haha, right?) No Time for Flash Cards uses pieces of scrap paper instead to make a rainbow.
- Connect the cans of food by the colored paper!
- Remember the game, Simon? Toddler Approved makes a version of Simon with colors of sidewalk chalk!
- Combine a snack with learning colors and make a Fruity O’s rainbow!
- Head outside and go on a nature color hunt like NurtureStore does.
- Simple Fun for Kids gets them moving and makes it a gross motor color game!
Sorting by Color Activities for Preschoolers
Sorting by color is an extension of color recognition in my book. But these color activities are ones that particularly focus on actually sorting the colors from each other, dividing up two or more.
- Make a sensory bag to sort the colored buttons in their corresponding circle.
- Simpler yet, sort colored buttons in cups!
- Or sort crayons, or toys, in small cups that you paint each primary color.
- Make a quick and easy color sorting busy bag! Learning and Exploring Through Play has the how-to.
- Do a quick color sort of Fruit Loops before making them into necklaces like Lil’ Scholars University.
- Get the kids moving by adding in a play tunnel to sort their blocks by color!
- Sort through scraps of paper by color and make color collages.
- School Time Snippets makes a cool Velcro tower to sort by color, take a look at it!
Mixing Color Activities for Preschoolers
Learning colors doesn’t have to be just recognizing them! It becomes magical when you start mixing colors together! Take any two of the three primary colors at a time and try any of the following activities to learn what color they make together!
- Mix colors together in jars by transferring colored water with paper towels. (PBS)
- Melt and mix colors with frozen paint on a hot, hot day!
- Magically mix colors with the infamous color changing milk experiment.
- A no-mess color activity to see how colors mix together on a window.
- Mix each of the primary colors to make every color of the rainbow on the window!
- No Time for Flash Cards mixes colors in the snow!
- Mix together two colors with play dough.
- Make pumpkin suncatchers with red and yellow!
- True Aim Education sets it up to explore colors on the window.
- Magical or technical? Learn about light refraction and mixing colors together! Get the know-how from De Tout Et De Rien.
- Grab your eye droppers and drop colors together to see what they make like Picklebums.
- Have a walking water color mixing experiment!
- Teaching 2 and 3 Year Olds does some color mixing in a bottle with marbles!
- Always cool and magical! Change the colors of a flower, mix two colors together to see what they create like Homegrown Friends.
- Spin art color mixing – http://ift.tt/1L4zD09
- Explore mixing colors in motion by spinning tops! You have to see this at Relentlessly Fun, Deceptively Educational!
Now, how’s that for some fun color activities for preschoolers? There’s so much more going on than just learning colors! And they won’t even know it, its so much fun!
