As the mom of a beautiful little girl I am always on the look out for ways to make sure she has a foundation to succeed. I want her to feel smart. I want her to be curious and excited to explore new ideas. My daughter has always been drawn to science activities. I couldn’t be happier!
I’ve made a point to provide her with the materials she needs to explore science on her own as well as offer activities that challenge her.
Today I’ve teamed up Green Works to help the next generation of female scientists unleash their power and discover their natural potential.
Green Works is the first official sponsor of StemBox, a monthly subscription service aimed at young girls, providing different hands on science experiments and concepts each month to explore STEM. (More on that after the activity!)
Lemon Battery Experiment: Use a Lemon as a Battery
Supplies we used (the StemBox included everything but lemons!):
- LED Bulbs
- Alligator Clips
- Nails (make sure they are zinc coated)
- Copper Wire
- 4 Lemons
Start by rolling the lemons on a hard surface to break open the juices inside. This ended up being far more fun then I expected. It was a great reminder to slow down and let my daughter take the lead.
Place one nail and one copper wire on opposite ends of each lemon.
Use one alligator clip to connect the nail from one lemon to the copper wire of another lemon. Repeat until all lemons are connected. Leave one copper wire and one nail empty.
Connect an alligator clip to the last nail. Connect another alligator clip to the last copper wire.
Separate the ends of an LED bulb. Clamp one alligator clip to each end.
Turn off the lights and check out what a few lemons are capable of!!!
